Re: A Certain Scientific Experiment (Arc 3 Main Story)

In an instant a gunfight broke out. The moment she had taken note of the gun wielded by the enemy, Mari immediately switched to another offensive pattern, by making the barrel roar like a beast on rampage, yet with the aim of an elite soldier on a shooting range.

That however is to be expected of someone who doesn’t budge, even when faced with a rain of bullets from up front.

«Don’tcha get it? Gunfire doesn’t do shit against me! My Force Command allows me to repel just anything!»

In fact, while many bullets would miss their target, those that would hit lost their momentum the instant they touched her, simply dropping to the ground without having accomplished any effect at all. Much like Neo from the Matrix, Mari Illustrious Makinami would simply walk through the shower of dreadful steel, repelling all and any death bringer while keeping up the burst of her own.

While she was, she was also continuing her approach, slowly.

«Drop dead you shrimp! There’s nothing you can do! As long as I have this shield of mine, you’re done f-…»

Too caught in her own advance she had done the same mistake again.

As the sudden wave of flames exploded behind, the glassed girl was knocked off her feet, being thrown forward only to crash into the rubble mercilessly.

Grunting in pain due to both the hard impact and the flames that had eaten through her heat resistant clothing, she did not come to a halt, but sped up instead. Immediately she made her move, fully aware of the fact that her opponent’s surprise attack had brought her closer to her goal. Quickly stretching out her arm, while pushing her body forward, she attempted to grab the other girl’s limb - any would do the job.

And once the other would feel the heavy grip around said limb, she wouldn’t hesitate. She would, with full force, with as much as she could bring up - both physically and through her ability - throw her, up into the sky.

Despite her back audibly colliding with the remains of the room's destroyed ceiling in a matter that could be described in no other way than painful after getting flung by her arm, Natsumi gritted her teeth and found some consolation in the fact that she had at least injured that madwoman even if her arm felt like it had literally been ripped out of its socket.

It was likely madwoman would come charging at her again while Natsumi was falling back down. Granting herself no loss of time in face of an enemy that could break such a distance in the blink of an eye, Natsumi ignited another fireball in the small space between her and Mari as soon as she could after her collision.

This explosion would be much bigger, less contained, than the previous one.

It was rather suicidal because if she wasn't killed by the explosion, then it was likely that this explosion was going to cause the building to finally cave the rest of its destroyed structure in after so many tremors.

But she needed great measures against great foes, after all. If she was going to die anyway, she might as well take her enemy along with her.

The young man was struggling to his feet with great effort. A swift punt to the ribs lifted him off the floor for a moment before he dropped.

"Still alive?" Accelerator snorted derisively. "So wasting everyone's time and just die." He whipped his foot up again into Guy's stomach with a tap that took a fraction of his strength but was sufficient to roll the boy several feet away onto his back. Accelerator approached with a lazy stroll, his face split with a lunatic grin. "Nothing to say? No dumb quips ? Wanna skip to begging for your life?"

"N-nah." Guy coughed out, pressing himself up onto his hands and knees. "You talk enough for the both of us." He chuckled shakily, glancing up at his foe with a grin of his own that wasn't diminished by the steam of blood caking the right side of his face that forced his right eye closed. That defiant look stoked Accelerator's anger further. He was past the point of crushing this idiot. He wanted the specimen in front of him to suffer a long and grueling death.

***

The clone beside Mikoto  moved suddenly from their new hiding spot, galvanised by some call to action heard only to her.

"It's over. The interloper has lost says Misaka, assessing the situation."  She said, heading for the scene of the battle like a bloodhound following a scent.

***

"Still feel like cracking jokes?" Accelerator batted the young man aside with a weak swat of his arm.

The sharp sound of a ricochet rang in Accelerator's ear. From the direction of the exploding facility, at a distance of no more than 10 metres the second clone, tonight's 'sacrificial lamb' knelt with her rifle shouldered and trained on the Level 5.

"I thought I told you to stay put." He glowered, delivering a dismissive kick that sent Guy tumbling away. He felt the impact, but was blissfully unconscious before he came to a sudden stop against something solid.

The next few moments came to Guy like a slideshow. Still moments of a gunfight happening only feet away. Bullets reflecting back and forth at impossible trajectories.

Reflecting back under some unseen force.

A moment of clarity that vanished into the inky blackness as he fell unconscious again.

Originally it had been Mari’s intention to initiate a game of human baseball. Therefore she had forced herself back onto her legs nearly immediately, grabbing a chunk of steel that’d seemingly perform quite well as the lethal bat, used to likely knock off the head that’d become the ball in this deathly version of the popular sport.

However…

«You’re fucking kidding…!»

A heavy tremor became sign of that game’s cancellation.

This time the explosion was even more severe than the one before, enveloping it all in glowing orange, over yellow down to white light.

It couldn’t be helped, no human being had the leg strength to simply remain standing. No Sylvester, no Arnold and not even a Hulk. So what was the result for a Mari?

Sent flying, then crashing into the rubble many metres away, her destiny was likely settled on. This time it had to be defeat for sure. Even her sluggish attempt to shield herself with that chunk that was a better baseball bat than protector seemed futile in comparison to the attack the had been faced with. This time, the tides had turned. This time it had been Mari that had met the overly unreasonable force that was her opponent’s ability.

How ironic.

Buried after having crashed into the rubble, there remained no trace of the girl. There no movement to take notice of, no sound, no presence. It seemed as if…everything around her had lost its driving force.

Standing on the edge of a roof near the building that was visibly devastated by the sheer amount of destruction the Espers inside were inflicting upon it, the girl with shoulder-length brown hair found her heart racing each time she would notice signs of explosions and the building's facades caving in.

Just mere minutes ago had her “sister” headed off to support those that were carrying out those deadly fights. This, surely, could only mean that her worst fears had come true.

The people who were supposed to return had yet to do so.

It was very likely that at this rate, they would never return again, so...

***

A fair amount of time had passed. Finally regaining consciousness, Natsumi coughed and groaned as she attempted to lift herself from the debris she was buried under. However, she had to stifle a yelp of pain as she used the wrong arm to do so, noting with full displeasure the arm was very likely dislocated and broken.

Rubble fell to the ground as Natsumi heaved herself upwards, her hair coming undone from the messy bun. Her clothes were tattered with severe burn holes, but they had done a good job at their mission: making sure they absorbed the impact of the hit enough for her to deal with manageable burns rather than severe ones.

Nonetheless, she found herself standing with great difficulty as she analysed her surroundings. The result of her actions plus her injuries made her abnormally exhausted and she could only pray this had been enough to do the monster in.

That monster was nowhere to be seen, yet she could not help but cynically laugh on the inside for there was no way she had defeated her with something that inherently simple. She most certainly didn't lack confidence in her abilities, but she had learnt to never let your guard down until you'd found an immobile corpse.

Who knew what could come back to life in this city, after all.

(Aaah, fuck it already...)

And so, bracing herself for Mari's potential return, she slowly trudged forwards looking for a spot filled with debris where Mari had likely landed going by their positions when the explosion hit. If there was a delay in reaction time from the impact Mari had received, then it just meant an advantage for her and if not, it's not like she had decided to fight with any true hope of surviving. This fight had to end, and soon.

***

Out of habit from the past weeks she had made her footsteps as silent as they could be, perhaps not silent enough, but she was beyond caring about that. It seemed Natsumi had done well in keeping Accelerator's watch dog away, which she was somewhat thankful for.

She reached her destination and in front of her was a boy only barely older than the albino that had completely beaten him up. She wasn't too sure if he was still conscious or not, but bending down to check his pulse told her he was alive and that was far enough for her as long as she could save him in time.

“...Hey. Sorry about this.” She inhaled deeply and muttered, either talking to herself or to him. “I knew things would turn out like this but I still let you all go for my sake. I'm really bad at making up my mind, aren't I?”

She lifted herself from her crouching position and moved forwards, only sparing a last glance at Guy with a sincere smile. “Thanks. Don't worry, this time I'll stop this and I won't be as half-assed about it as I previously was.”

Only slightly further away was Accelerator, the source of this mess who was likely planning on dealing with her interfering clones next.

She lifted and extended her arm, holding a coin between her thumb and index. “Accelerator. Stop.” Mikoto uttered this very simple word with a new-found confidence that all the people that had gotten themselves involved in her mess had allowed her to gather. A confidence much more stronger than her previous fake one, and for that she was thankful.

Now only to hope she would make it in time as well.

As if in reply to that girl approaching the mountain of rubble covering her, Mari once again rose from the dead.

Her ability had come in too convenient. While it could not do a thing against abstract forces like shock waves, it allowed her to handle any sort of impact of solid form with too great an ease. The crash landing had once again lost all threat, nullifying all of its negative side effects.
Not being impaled by sharp pointy pipes, not having nails dig into her, not shattering any of her bones upon landing, she seemed to have gotten away with zero damage all over again.

With the rubble, dirt, dust and ashes falling off of her, her form was openly revealed in front of the other.

The eyes of a predator hadn’t lost their sparkle. She was breathing, still alive, still going.

Mari Illustrious Makinami was a monster…

«…shit…»

No she was human!

Covered in burns, even her heat resistant body suit had long since ceased to serve its purpose. It was torn at places, revealing her naked flesh at some. Scars were here and there, likely caused by shrapnel that had been thrown at her as part of the sudden explosion.

Her breathing was heavy, her composure lost.

Mari was just a human after all. As such not even she herself held the strength to simply endure anything.

Drawing her shiny military knife from a holster that hung loosely on her belt, she was facing towards the middle schooler.

«…a persistent…little…cockroach…ain’t ya?!»

Even with her breath lost she still made her move. While her whole body - besides the glasses - seemed to be in an terrifyingly terrible state, Mari’s legs still held the capability to keep up to the tempo she had shown before. The quick steps allowed her to cross the distance in nearly an instance, leading up to a sharp slash aimed straight for the other girl’s throat - instantaneous decapitation!

Re: A Certain Scientific Experiment (Arc 3 Main Story)

Post  Kira Kohaku on Thu Mar 31, 2016 2:28 pm

The cheap cell phone in her hand lit up with a single message. [Are you in position?]

From her position on the rooftop of building different from the one Mikoto was on, Kuroko had a clear view of the automated steel mill facility. The final battle would soon be commencing and the situation could only be described as do or die.

As the wind blew through that late summer night, it pushed against the girl's pigtails and pleated skirt, leaving them to simply flutter the best they could. While her gray-pleated skirt had remained, her regular uniform top had been completely replaced by a cream-colored t-shirt covered by a brown sleeveless vest. Around her thighs were two belts each, holding a number of metal spikes. Such was more than enough to move around comfortably in.

Even with the bandages around her right arm and leg, she was still able to move around without much impediment. Even the occasional feeling of exposed flesh rubbing against disinfectant and exposed flesh, while uncomfortable, was not enough to break any focus.

The hands, covered in black heat-resistant gloves, closed the phone. She had one last chance to back out. She was merely standing, staring at the Rubicon. The moment she made her first teleport jump towards that steel mill, she would no longer be able to turn away.

But, even so, I said I would stay by Onee-sama's side. I'm not going to turn back here. With that final thought, she tossed the phone into the air above her, grabbed two of her metal spikes, and teleported them into the phone. As the two metal spikes overlapped with the phone's position, they displaced the mass that overlapped with them. The phone finally landed in her hand, with the two spikes attached. She pulled the two spikes out and placed them back into the straps around her legs.

And the line of communication is now cut. All that's left is to head towards the beast's maw. She tossed the now functionless phone behind her. With a final nod, she made the first teleport jump off the roof towards the steel mill. "'Alea iacta est,' I believe the saying was."

Despite a certain level of eagerness Kuroko had when she had finally crossed the Rubicon, there was still one problem.

The building was a steel mill. That, of course, meant that there would be a large amount of pipes placed into some complex internal network jutting out throughout a good portion of the building, much like the the room she had opened up to. She was on the third floor, making her way to the boiler area where she would be able to assist Natsumi. At least she was supposed to be. However, the sound of an explosion had reverberated in front of her not just a few minutes ago.

After following the source of the sound, she eventually made it to a certain door. Beyond it was nothing more than pure destruction. From the roof to the walls to the pipes, the entire area was collapsing. She could even see the night sky as she looked up at the hole formed in the now caved-in roof.

She teleported down to the level below to get a closer look at the ground floor where all had collapsed to.

The sight she saw was Mari standing a distance from Natsumi, both heavily breathing and with one drawing a military knife. It was obvious what was going to happen.

«…a persistent…little…cockroach…ain’t ya?!»

Kuroko immediately grabbed two of her spikes in response and bent her knees in readiness to jump in.

(OST: Fake Red Shoes)

She had fully expected Mari to run towards Natsumi and stab her. But, she did not anticipate the speed at which she would be able to close that distance.

«DIIIEEEE!!!»

"DAMMIT!" She cursed under her breath as she teleported the two spikes into the locations where she expected the assailant's rotator cuff and upper deltoid to be. In the next instant, ignoring whether the spikes had pierced or not, she teleported to Natsumi, grabbed at the collar and pulled down before teleporting the two of them about 20 meters back behind a piece of rubble.

"That was too close for comfort…" She sighed a breath of relief before pulling out another two spikes. She could only hope her previous two spikes had hit their targets.

«AAAAAHHHH»

A voice of pain was reverberating through the empty ruins.

The light sound of metal colliding with concrete.

Heavy panting.

Mari, right in the action of taking her opponent’s head, had tremendous pain surging through all of her body. All of a sudden it had been as if she had been stabbed in a sensitive area, robbing her arm of all strength. Unable to pursue the attacking motion any longer, she had let go of the knife, her arm losing all motion and her sprint becoming as useless as it could have been. Unable to keep balance with that attempt failed, she stumbled and fell into the empty space where her opponent had been just a moment ago.

Somebody had interfered.

Landing on her knees, the girl remained silent for a moment, breathing even heavier.

It was obvious how great the exhaustion was at this point of the battle. The pain made it even worse.

«To think the fluffy dreams hero squad would be the ones to play unfair…haha…how fucked up is this world…?»

With her arm hanging by her side limply, the girl’s threat level had been further reduced. Obviously she wouldn’t get up that easily either, considering how strained her body appeared that moment. Covered in burns and bruises, only left with a single arm and hardly able to breathe normally, the image of a monster had disappeared. All she was now, was a girl that had burned herself out.

«…how much I would like to kill you two right now…I’d kick ya asses so badly…but…»

She could feel it, it was no use. One was a Pyrokinesist, the other a Teleporter, both Level 4. In her current condition there was no way to even try pursuing victory. With perfectly free motion and attacks that could cross her ability’s protection, the outcome was obvious.

Closing both of her eyes, she took a final breath.

«Finish it. Watcha waiting for!?»

It was disappointing, to say the least; the miserable sight Mari was giving off was something to behold, yet Natsumi could not feel any satisfaction in her victory despite being the one to bring that monster to her limits, allowing Kuroko to do her in. The only thing she was pleasantly surprised about was to not find her head rolling a few metres away from her body, but even that was something she didn't care about much.

Sparing a glance towards Kuroko, who had taken such a sweet time in providing assistance that Natsumi had fervently believed she had abandoned her, she proceeded to tap the twin-tailed girl's shoulder and point towards the ground to warn her to stay put while she slowly but surely trudged towards Mari.

It was a conversation that wasn't meant for the ears of outsiders, but it was her only shot at this conversation so Natsumi made sure that she kept her back to Kuroko.

Only stopping a fair few safety metres away from her, Natsumi stared straight at the monster whose hands she had been so sure she would die at. “Hero this, princess that...” Though it wasn't a whisper, Natsumi made sure to keep her voice low. “Despite the fact that we're the underdogs that carry out this city's repugnant will, don't tell me you still believe in fairness and fairy tales?” The question was ironic, you would think that someone as apparently strong as Mari would be the first one to discard such pointless nonsense when faced with the truth of the acclaimed Academy City, but Natsumi could not shrug off the feeling that the monstrous girl was actually much more idealistic than she acted.

«Hero this, princess that...»

In the end it would come down to words.

«Despite the fact that we're the underdogs that carry out this city's repugnant will, don't tell me you still believe in fairness and fairy tales?»

«Ain’t that exactly what you’re doing?»

Fending off the expectations the other girl may have had, Mari forced herself to bring forth a few words. After all this, no matter how worn out she was right now, she still hadn’t given up on a strong appearance. Maybe that girl was right, maybe she wasn't, however that had never been the true meaning behind Mari’s words.

Breathing heavily she went on.

«Don’t gimme that shit about being curious about what might happen… you’ve been risking your life to protect those power rangers! Without you they’d already be dead and you know that, you fear that. Or why are you still here? Isn’t it you that is struggling for this little fairy tale to go on?»

Another break for breathing.

«We both know we’re dead as shit, that’s what shit heads get for interfering and that’s what shit heads get for being useless.»

From her voice alone it was clear that she was struggling to continue. Naturally she would have spoken loud, not showing any care for the other’s wishes, however her current condition practically forced her to keep it low.

Struggling to make her point in this pointless talk between killers, she showed no sign of lowering her head.

«Unlike me, you chose that road for yourself, ain’t that true hime-chan?»

Without you they’d already be dead and you know that, you fear that. Or why are you still here? Isn’t it you that is struggling for this little fairy tale to go on?»

“Oh my, don't give me all the credit; there's still lots of time for those two to get killed.”

Nonetheless, Mari was right.

For someone who took pride in not getting involved in anything that didn't require her to and for someone who had told that boy off for needlessly endangering him to absurd degrees, she sure had found herself in an oddly hypocritical position since his arrival in Academy City.

«We both know we’re dead as shit, that’s what shit heads get for interfering and that’s what shit heads get for being useless. Unlike me, you chose that road for yourself, ain’t that true hime-chan?»

Why had she risked her life to this extent?

“Your assumptions aside, I guess you're right in that I'm rooting for that boy's fairy tale to continue and supported it. But don't get me wrong, I'm not a hero who wants to protect people from their fate; I couldn't care less about what the Sisters were born or will live for.”

After a bit of thinking, she finally admitted to herself, aloud, her reasons for getting involved and her features were slowly adorned with what couldn't be anything but a lunatic's twisted smile.

“It's just that there's something a lot more grandiose that lies ahead on the path of his fairy tale coming true that I want to see: Humanity's foolish spectacle.”

While the others had been risking their lives to protect girls from their tragic fate, she bore the less noble and selfish goal of merely ensuring the continuation of a story that would change many lives drastically.

A turn no one could have predicted before the events that set the gears in motion occurred; a story she had desperately dreamt of witnessing since her arrival in Academy City.

“Accelerator's defeat by his hands would change how Academy City works and its citizens in many, many ways. I want to see how that fairy tale of his will eventually destroy Academy City as we know it, whether he's aware of it or not.”

And so as her eyes clouded over her smile slowly turned into an equally perverted grin and she widely spread her only functioning arm in a quiet proclamation.

“I've had to remove myself for a bit to make sure it would happen, but isn't the position of an observer the best place you can stand in when the world burns after you've played a part in sparking the flames~?

«It’s just that there's something a lot more grandiose that lies ahead on the path of his fairy tale coming true that I want to see: Humanity's foolish spectacle.»

«Accelerator’s defeat by his hands would change how Academy City works and its citizens in many, many ways. I want to see how that fairy tale of his will eventually destroy Academy City as we know it, whether he's aware of it or not.»

«I’ve had to remove myself for a bit to make sure it would happen, but isn't the position of an observer the best place you can stand in when the world burns after you've played a part in sparking the flames~?»

So this was the face of the true villain.

Silence fell between the two, after that girl had revealed that smile embodying her true nature.

It appeared as if Mari was at loss of words, had her thesis been shattered mercilessly.

This girl had been entirely different than anything she had assumed. This girl easily exceeded her expectations, her prejudice, her view of the usual Dark Side workers, it defied logic. If she was honest with herself, she had never seen such an amount of insanity in a person, not even among the many she had fought in this city’s shadows. There had been many crazies, but this was a different kind; this was someone actually expecting to be right, someone who really thought they could take on the whole city, destroying its very structure, alternating the place into a state that was at loss of order.

This girl was dead serious.

«…hahahahhaahhahahaha!!!»

All of a sudden the silence was broken by an intense burst of laughter. So intense that even Mari couldn’t keep her body in an upright position any longer, falling over, cringing in enjoyment and pain.

«Hahahahahhahahaaha! You’re great! Ridiculous!!! Hahaha! Destroying this city’s order…hahaha!!!»

Laughing to her heart’s content, it seemed as if Mari had gone beyond entertained. She considered it crazy, that was more than obvious. Yet somewhere in her laughter one would be able to recognise the dread she felt from those words, from everything that made up this situation. If she was truly honest to herself, even she had questioned how the world would change was he really defeated right here.

However…

All of a sudden she moved without so much as a warning or a hint. Tilting her head towards that girl, she quickly cast it, the knife. Playing the act of the laughing hyena she had fallen over, used her own body as cover whilst reaching out to it. Knowing her only option was a throwing move, she went beyond the knife’s original purpose of being a close combat weapon. While in our usual scenario this kind of usage would be stupid, the girl’s powers came in quite handy. Thus that knife that would be worth shit when thrown, was turned into a dangerous dart driving solely by tremendous force, aimed straight for that monster’s chest.

«Sorry…but I can’t allow that. Everything’s good the way it is…there’s no need for change. Insanities like you should just disappear…shits like you who’re unhappy enough to piss on everyone else just for the fun…the world’s not your playing field…know your place…»

«Sorry…but I can’t allow that. Everything’s good the way it is…there’s no need for change. Insanities like you should just disappear…shits like you who’re unhappy enough to piss on everyone else just for the fun…the world’s not your playing field…know your place…»

“Heh...”

A split second later and the girl would have surely received the incoming knife right in the heart.

However, a certain degree of experience-inspired instinct had thankfully allowed her to at least attempt to jump out of the way for the rapid knife to plunge deep under her ribcage; she hadn't been fast enough to dodge the knife entirely, but that was definitely better than instant death.

Blood stained her clothes and splashed on a forming puddle as it quickly seeped from the wound, dripping from her mouth while she coughed out a small, amused laugh alongside it. “Nothing needs to change about a city that created artificial humans just to kill them?" Natsumi paused to breath heavily as she internally mocked the irony of what Mari said.

"Am I really the insane one between the two of us?”

She had forced those words out with difficulty, only managing to speak thanks to her amusement triumphing over the severe pain she felt to be slowly numbing away along with her senses and consciousness.

Taking a much deeper breath than before... “Indeed... This city is the fucked-up playing field of the sick bastard that created it, not mine... But no matter what you think, time will eventually bring about change... no, rather, it already started... and I look forward to it.” ...she finally stated the last thing she would say on this matter before falling to her knees in a panting frenzy, grasping the wound with her only available hand.

The term reckless did not even describe it. Natsumi was injured. Even if their opponent was seemingly ready to give up, going up to initiate conversation or even attack her head on was way too risky of a move.  Even worse, she had signaled Kuroko to stay put. No matter how Kuroko looked at it, this was something which even she would never be reckless enough to do.

Yet, there Natsumi was, going straight up to the glasses girl and opening some sort of conversation. . She would indulge Natsumi's selfish request for now. She would make sure that the moment the dialogue went downhill and a fight broke out, she would be ready to end everything.

For that, it was best that she got close enough to keep better watch. As she picked up some nearby metal object, which she could use as a blunt weapon if need be, she found another piece of rubble jutting out from the ground about 10 meters away. In a single jump, she teleported to right behind that rubble and shifted her body to keep an eye out from behind the rubble.

«Isn’t it you that is struggling for this little fairy tale to go on?»

But certain words seemed to reach her ears. Even though she was not supposed to be listening, she could overhear a bit of their conversation.

Fairy tale? Is that what you call it? If it is, then fine. I'll struggle as much as I have to for that happy ending.

«We both know we’re dead as shit…»

There was a certain level of hopelessness that Kuroko could take out of that line. Listening to the glasses girl say that was like hearing someone who was tired of walking forward. Weariness and apathy all seemed to just exude from that line.

Kuroko hated it. Even if she was now her enemy, she hated seeing someone standing before her who was at the end of her ropes. The worst part was that she had no idea what to do about it. After all, she was a mere stranger taking pity on her enemy based on one moment of vulnerability.

«Unlike me, you chose that road for yourself, ain’t that true hime-chan?»

She had sounded like someone trying to look eye to eye with someone on the same plane as her. Meanwhile, all Kuroko could do was sit and watch in the distance with no idea of what to do. Even if she was certain of the road she chose for herself here, she could say nothing of what paths Natsumi or the glasses girl had taken to reach the point where they could talk like this.

"I guess you're right in that I'm rooting for that boy's fairy tale to continue"

Beyond all of the darkness those two seemed to be mired in, Kuroko smirked at the sound of those words. No matter how much she looked at it, her, her onee-sama's, and barbarian-sensei's desire to save the Sisters truly resembled a fairy tale. As rose-colored as those words were, their veracity was evident.

"But don't get me wrong, I'm not a hero who wants to protect"

Huh?!

"I couldn't care less about what the Sisters were born or will live for.”

Kuroko's eyes widened. She could not believe what she was hearing. She wanted to believe that she had heard wrong. If she did not even care about the fate of the Sisters who they were fighting to save, then what did she want?

She just wanted to reject that statement. She wanted to reject the possibility that she had even heard that statement. However…

"…I want to see: Humanity's foolish spectacle.”

Humanity's foolish spectacle? She questioned that very phrase multiple times, coming to one singular option that was immediately confirmed by the next thing she heard.

"...the best place you can stand in when the world burns after you've played a part in sparking the flames~?”

Kuroko clenched her teeth. She clenched her right fist and clamped onto her leg with her left hand. She made certain that she was restraining herself from trying to kick off into a teleport and knock both Natsumi and the glasses girl out right then and there. Even though Kuroko could not see her face, she was certain that Natsumi was being completely smug. But, she had to suppress her reckless urges to jump straight in.

To stand and watch the world burn with a smile after contributing to the fire…you used me…you used that barbarian…you used the Sisters…and you used ONEE-SAMA for something like THAT?!  To have the gall to distort onee-sama's innocent and warm desires for your own twisted entertainment…absolutely DESPICABLE.

Her chain of thought was immediately broken by the glasses girl's laughter.

«Hahahahahhahahaaha! You’re great! Ridiculous!!! Hahaha! Destroying this city’s order…hahaha!!!»

But none of that mattered now. She could give Natsumi an earful later. Even if it was exactly as Natsumi had wished to see happen, she would help save the Sisters. Even if she felt like a villain for assisting Natsumi with her own machinations, she still had a goal to achieve.

«Insanities like you should just disappear»

Even if she found herself in agreement with the glasses girl's sentiment…

The glasses girl readied a throw with a knife in her hand. Kuroko, with a second of delay jumped for a teleport.

…she would find some way to make that insanity die without the glasses girl's bloodshed.

Exiting the teleport 30 centimeters above the ground and right behind Mari, Kuroko slammed the flat end of the object in her hand to the nape of her neck before teleporting again and landing next to Natsumi.

Even though Natsumi had dodged the knife at the last moment, she seemed to have been grazed enough for the attack to have caused damage. Despite the wound and the pain, she continued to talk. “Nothing needs to change about a city that created artificial humans just to kill them? Am I really the insane one between the two of us? Indeed... This city is the fucked-up playing field of the sick bastard that created it, not mine... But no matter what you think, time will eventually bring about change... no, rather, it already started... and I look forward to it."

Kuroko looked with scorn at the smile of her ally who seemed satisfied to have the last laugh as she tossed away what was Natsumi's gun. She had many things she wanted to say or even retort with. But, taking care of her ally's wound was the top priority.

“Onee-sama should get to a safe distance and disengage, says Misaka, aware that her advice will have no effect.” The first clone dove into a tactical roll as the ground she had been standing on bloomed with a cloud of dust from her returning bullets. “You again?” He sighed. This was all getting to be too much. “At least someone interesting finally showed up. I guess you're here to play the hero and stop me? “ he mocked the confident figure standing before him even as the clones trained their rifles on his body. To an onlooker the situation would have appeared unfair in the extreme. But this single unarmed teen-ager was more than a match for two rifles and a railgun. “Well, give it your best shot, because you're only gonna get one.”

He opened his arms, tilted his head back to look at the sky and waited.

Familiar pain welled up in Guys arm. And chest… and head… infact his entire body felt like it was one singular injury at this point.

He heard a voice.

“...Hey. Sorry about this. I knew things would turn out like this but I still let you all go for my sake. I'm really bad at making up my mind, aren't I?”

What the hell was she talking about? It sounded important. He tried to respond but she continued.

Thanks. Don't worry, this time I'll stop this and I won't be as half-assed about it as I previously was.”

Wait! Don't you dare… it was too late. She was gone. Whether she heard him or if he had even spoken the words, he wasn't sure. He blinked and minutes passed. It was chaos. His punch drunk mind raced to catch up. He remembered now. They were picking a fight with monsters. And they were losing.

Badly

“Heh. A person can't even die in peace around here.. “ He coughed, pressing up onto his feet where he crouched for a moment to catch his bearings.

Accelerator wasn't going to give any ground.

“Come on! Do it!” The Level Five bellowed like he was challenging the Gods themselves. His reason soon became clear as the supercharged projectile ricocheted off his body at an angle impossible to normal physics. The orange afterglow of the coin’s path arced towards the second Sister. The message was clear. Your strongest weapon is your biggest liability. Mikoto herself might be able to defend against her own railgun but any attack aimed at him would just be used against her allies instead. ”Wanna try again? “

Another salvo from the first clone peppered him like rain drops, curving back at the empty rifle as the girl dropped it. Unarmed and cornered, she watched impassively as her doom approached.

***

A dislocated shoulder and torn ligaments in his deltoid. Guy counted at least three broken ribs. His collarbone was cracked and his right arm was fractured at the ulna. Not to mention the throbbing in his head. But…

Accelerator stood over the weaponless clone, ready to deliver the killing blow.

“That's a pretty convenient ability you've got.” Guy called over. He rocked his weight backwards onto one foot, adopting something that could be loosely called a ’stance’ but the lethargic, laboured movements betrayed his weakened state. “But I've figured it out. Your power that is…”

Figured… it… out? Accelerator looked almost astonished at Guy’s audacity before he shrugged and ruefully shook his head. “Can't you even die right?"

Damn…I missed…

As if to encourage the negative energy that thought was trenched with, Mari felt a strong impact, finally robbing her of the last bit of strength that had been left in her body. Collapsing limply, it was plain as day that all was gone; no aces up her sleeve, no further miracle strength, that had been all. Not that it came unpredicted, had that throw already been her final leap of faith.

«Nothing needs to change about a city that created artificial humans just to kill them? Am I really the insane one between the two of us? Indeed... This city is the fucked-up playing field of the sick bastard that created it, not mine... But no matter what you think, time will eventually bring about change... no, rather, it already started... and I look forward to it.»

Struggling to even contain the strength allowing her to remain conscious, all she was left with were those words.

She would have loved to reply, yet even that task seemed to be as impossible as it could get. Bringing up the last bit of strength remaining inside her bones, she tilted her head in order to face that girl’s twin tailed ally.

Her eyes, as weak as they were, they still dug themselves deep into the other’s.

«…gh…you’re the greatest…fool of ’em all…whatever will happen from now on…you’ll regret it…»

Each and every word had become a struggle.

«…there’s…no such shit as…happy end…»

What was she even straining herself for?

«…someone…has already…written your…story…»

Those were her final words.

Re: A Certain Scientific Experiment (Arc 3 Main Story)

Post  Misaka Mikoto on Tue Apr 19, 2016 2:36 am

Throughout her life, Misaka Mikoto was always viewed as a hard-worker that could do anything as long as she put her mind to it and for a good reason: the girl who had gone from a mere Level 1 playing with her electricity under her blanket had become the pride and public face of Academy City, as well as one of its highest standing people on the surface.

Praised by most, cursed by many, Mikoto had always found herself despising her isolating notoriety and fame but she also had eventually grown to be fooled by and nurture that very same belief within herself; if she tried, she could do it no matter how far-fetched the goal was.

So imagine how powerless and minuscule she felt when she realised that the world, reality itself, had a very different idea for her. Gone was her throwing her railgun around as a threat to those who stood in her way; it had now become the very weapon that could kill the people she desperately wanted to protect.

At some point, she had completely forgotten that once stripped of her powers, she was simply a naively optimistic teenage girl like any other.

Her illusions had her mistakenly believe she could achieve anything she wanted by simply willing it, yet reality brought her back by dictating that there was not a single thing she could correctly do no matter how hard she tried.

Wanna try again?“

Barely missing the gradually cornered Sister, Mikoto felt a pang of pure fear in her chest at the realisation that she had come very close to officially killing a clone with her own hands. Accelerator had used this as a destabilising reminder that there was nothing she could do that hadn't already been attempted against him. “Ugh...” She cursed herself for her uselessness as she looked on at the impending albino doom approaching her clone and looked at her hands.

(What should I...)

An idea came to her as she moved her hands in front of her, as if suddenly captivated by them.

(...Ah, that's right. He wouldn't be able to use me as a weapon against her, would he...?)

The fact that this was Accelerator meant that any physical attacks she would try to land on him would be particularly painful and would result in broken bones, especially seeing how she had quite a frail body. PE comprised most, if not all, of the physical exercise she had gone through in her life; she had never had to actually truly lay a hand or brawl with anyone, after all.

But there was no way for her to endanger her sister as long as she refrained from using her ability.

Taking a deep breath, she clenched her fists.

(Come on, Mikoto. This is the last thing you can do, don't be afraid of pain and injuries, you're supposed to die here!)

And then, she took a decisive step forward.

Yet...

“That's a pretty convenient ability you've got.”

“...!!”

Turning in shock towards the boy she had left behind who proved to be the very definition of “beaten up”, Mikoto could not even attempt to hide her surprised gasp. It was a mystery if his body was truly human by how he still managed to stand even after being kicked and thrown around so much. These injuries would have definitely killed any regular person long ago...

“But I've figured it out. Your power that is…”

“Figured it... out?” What did he mean, figure it out? There was no figuring out Accelerator's ability beyond understanding that nothing could get through that ultimate shield of his, was there?

(Why the hell can that idiot still not find it in him to just stay where he can be safe and let me do what I have to do?!)

She however found no time to waste on any further pondering going by how his idea had gone so far, and opted to bellow at him in concern instead. “What the hell are you doing?!” She growled at Guy as she found herself reluctantly agreeing with Accelerator about his issue when it came to admitting defeat.

“Just stay away already! I don't know what kind of idea you have now, but it's not going to work!”

Mikoto knew better than to think she could actually get him to give up without using force, but her childish self still couldn't help but wish that it would actually happen.

What the hell are you doing?! Just stay away already! I don't know what kind of idea you have now, but it's not going to work!

"Stay away?" He forced a weak laugh. "You've gotta be kidding. I've got him right where I want him." He didn't sound like he was bluffing. Thanks to Guy's goading Accelerator had whipped himself into a frenzy, such that even the sound of the older boy's voice caused his teeth to set on edge. He felt his chest tighten and churn with burning anger.

Accelerator could end this right now if he wanted. That much is obvious. But right now he doesn't want me dead. He'll draw it out as long as we don't give him any reason to bring out the big guns. That's my advantage. Every extra second I last, every mistake he makes gives me another chance to turn the tables. That's right... I just have to keep fighting and eventually...

"Last chance." Guy felt his breathing steady, he needed to conserve his strength. "Stop the experiment and no one has to die." It was a long shot. In fact it probably wasn't worth his breath, but talking down an enemy was always worth a try. But they both knew that 'just stopping' was never an option. Whether Accelerator consented or not, Level Six Shift would continue. He wasn't the root of this evil, merely a symptom.

"No one has to die?" Accelerator's words were strangled by the tightness in his chest. "I disagree!" He brought his foot down hard and burst forward with the force of a rocket propelled grenade.

A blur shot past Guy's head. A wide, swiping hit that would have probably torn off a limb had the young teacher attempted to block it. He twisted away, the attack missing by the narrowest margin. Another followed with blinding speed but again, as if by sheer luck the blow missed its mark as Guy backed up towards the collapsing wall of the facility. A third raking blow cut a gouge or of the wall as Guy ducked.

I know his secret. I just need to time it right... Find the range... He threw out his right hand to Accelerator's eyes. And the Level Five had blinked. A natural, unconscious panic response for any human, even one with his powers.

In that moment of hesitation, Guy's left hand flew into Accelerator's stomach and the boy braced for pain. His fingers made contact. He felt them being pushed back with tremendous force. This was the moment. He snapped his hand back only to feel it shoot forwards into the other boy's solar plexus.

Not that it helped his hand. Finding the correct distance had been costly. His right arm was already fractured and now the fingers of his left hand were mangled. A regular person couldn't punch in that condition, not to mention his other injuries.

"Wh- *wheeze* what did you-?" Accelerator had dropped to one knee, cradling his chest and spasming diaphragm that refused to draw breath into his lungs.

"I told you..." Guy's voice sounded cold and analytical and completely without pride. "I've figured you out. Get lost before I put you down for good." This time he was bluffing.

Accelerator stood shakily and faced this 'trash' who had managed to touch him. Looking at him it seemed absurd to think he posed any sort of threat. He was half dead, and his hands...

Staggering forward, Accelerator bared his teeth in an ugly, grimacing frown and raised his arm. It was time to end this. He didn't have to worry about Guy's right arm, now swollen and hanging limply at his side. And it would be easy enough to dodge an attack from his left if he knew it was coming. Yeah.

This was over...

Predictably, the young man with shaggy black hair lifted his left arm in a feeble punch. Accelerator stepped past the attack and swing his own arm across, aiming to take Guy's head off.

He only caught a glimpse of Guy's right hand roaring towards his face, the fingers coiling into a fist at just the right moment, knuckles grinding into flesh and crunching against bone. He could taste blood, unconscious before he hit the ground.

Guy's hand shattered, his fractured arm breaking under the force of his punch. A split second later and the unconscious Esper's fist collided with his own head. Without the force of Accelerator's Vector Control driving it the blow had all the impact of a regular teenager's punch.

There was a strange moment of stillness as only one of the pair was left standing. To the relief of all present, the sociopathic albino lay sprawled over the floor in an ungainly heap.

But the boy who remained standing wasn't moving.

In fact, though his body remained upright, his expression was blank. His eyes were glassy.

He was unconscious. As though even now he was unwilling to accept the reality that his body has far surpassed is limits.

The next thing he saw was the glare of bright lights above him.

It took her a while to acknowledge Kuroko's close presence, but when she finally did Natsumi stopped panting heavily and after thoroughly telling Kuroko not to lay a single hand on the foreign object that was currently well embedded in her body, she finally forced herself back to her feet.

She was currently way too out of it to pay Mari's final words any heed, and so she only stared straight ahead as she called out to Kuroko. “Shirai.” She spoke with much difficulty now that the tension was reduced considerably from Mari's defeat.“Teleport us to wherever that idiot decided to make his resting place.” It was a simple request, but she also motioned for Mari as she spoke; it was a very bad idea to attempt leaving the enemy unattended, after all, and she was far too tired to deal with any more of this.

"You don't need to tell me what I already know." There was an obvious sense of disdain coming from Kuroko's voice. She was less annoyed at the fact that Natsumi was barking orders and more annoyed at the fact that Natsumi was barking orders. Even if now was not the time to get all testy, Kuroko was still a mere teenage girl. There were certain things she could and could not take. After hearing Natsumi baring her own deepest desires in front of her, Kuroko could not help but feel somewhat uncomfortable with her.

But, she went along with it anyway. Now was not the time to worry about her own personal gripes with Natsumi. She could come to terms with that later. Now was the time to go make sure the so-called 'idiot' succeeded.

She supported Natsumi on one shoulder and teleported over to Mari before grabbing her and pulling her up on the other shoulder.

They were heavy. She was used to teleporting other people but teleporting with both of them being supported by her was another annoyance altogether. Still, they were in her weight range so she could teleport so long as she focused.

She looked to the other direction where she had heard the clanking and destruction of the mill from within and took one deep breath before teleporting. She made jump after jump until she reached a hallway next to an entrance…and beyond that entrance, she saw…

"Onee-sama…" She could only see Mikoto's back. She had finished screaming her heart out trying to stop the battle from progressing any further.

Kuroko slowly made her way in and she saw it. She saw Guy's fist colliding with Accelerator's face and knocking him out in a cross-counter that was far too close for comfort. She saw Accelerator fall to the ground, sprawled over rubble and Guy, albeit unconscious, still standing.

What was supposed to be a moment of relief was instead buried by layers and layers of shock at the incredulity of the scene before her.

This was the end goal they had desired. The plan had actually succeeded. Accelerator was beaten.

The relief she should have felt never pierced the layers of surprise. "He actually did it…"

Kuroko could only mutter those words as she stared at the scene before her and turned her head to face Mikoto.

"You don't need to tell me what I already know."

There was a certain amount of disdain in Kuroko's voice that had Natsumi smirk as she lowered her head.

(She heard, huh... Well, I guess I did stop paying attention to her at the end there so that's probably partially my fault.)

Natsumi hadn't been particularly surprised to learn Kuroko had done exactly the opposite of what she had told her, which was to stay still, but she also didn't find herself bothered by the situation; it's not like it would destroy any relationships for she had none. In fact, she could even see it as a blessing in a way. A Judgement member realising that their “justice” was not even scratching the surface of what Academy City was really like was certainly something worthwhile.

Especially for people like Kuroko, who lived by what seemed to her as utterly pointless ideals.

And she found herself thankful that there was not much for her to be bothered about because she was losing the strength to be bothered about anything by the minute.

"Onee-sama…"

Natsumi felt so out of it that she only realised that had changed locations after Kuroko spoke; her senses were dulling rapidly and she could only raise her head slightly at the call for Mikoto, her heavy eyes managing to find their way and widening towards what she wanted to see but never held a proper belief that she would.

Accelerator wasn't even being pushed back. He was being openly attacked, not by a smart way of fighting back against his ability using another one or by using surroundings.

It was a very simple punch that had taken down the feared monster of Academy City.

And the person who had achieved that could still be considered an outsider, unaware of how Academy City would function.

Her eyes started to have trouble focusing and most of what she could previously see became complete blurs.

"He actually did it…"

There was no joy in Natsumi's mind as she heard Kuroko's words even though this probably marked their common survival of this nonsense. It was raw, unfiltered shock; when she encouraged this outcome it was never with the idea it would have happened like this... so... simply. With such apparent ease compared to the reputation Accelerator had been given as an untouchable target.

She tried to ponder this situation in ways much more deeper than just victory or defeat, but...

(He's...)

“...ugh.”

...she could no longer gather the strength to do so as she suddenly exhaled. A heavy, unsupported weight added itself to Kuroko's shoulder as Natsumi's consciousness had completely slipped away from the amount of blood loss she had gone through, leaving a shallowly breathing mess behind; her will could only take her so far and this was its final destination.

«…it has gotten…silent…»

Mari Illustrious Makinami wasn’t dead.

In fact Mari Illustrious Makinami was likely one of the sturdiest people around, even if her ability was left out of the picture. She had taken plenty of beatings and burns today, but she still hadn’t died. To call her alive and kicking would however make a big exaggeration.

She couldn’t tell when exactly her consciousness had returned or how long it had been lost, but it didn’t matter to her as much, as another fact was bugging her much more.

«…does this…mean…?»

There was no one to listen to her words, so there was no sense of forcing herself through the insufferable act of speaking them out bit by bit, yet she still did. Maybe that was how much it bugged her.

Whatever had happened, that feeling of unease was overshadowing even the pain.

After all this, it had come to this.

As she lay there sprawled out on the ground of the burned out battlefield, she suddenly burst out in laughter.

It wasn’t any sort of strong or powerful laughter, there was no joy, no despair, she just forced her body to laugh, even though there was no strength left to. A laughter like a an engine without fuel.

There was no need for her own eyes to see it. There was no need for her to even have it confirmed by a third party. She already knew it had happened, naturally. Even if it shattered her very own belief, went against everything she had been raised with, against every concept that made up the existence that was this city, Mari already knew it had become a fact of the world.

Accelerator had been defeated.

Those fools had been successful.

That girl’s twisted fantasy had become reality.

She couldn’t help but laugh at that absurdity.

She couldn’t help but cry about the consequences.

Mari Illustrious Makinami wasn’t dead…yet.

She could have tried to pull him back with his belt, but he was already far too ahead in his attack for that to work at the last second.

“You idiot, stop!”
Her shout was filled with terror at the idea of the nightmare she had pictured in her mind becoming a reality; Mikoto was far too paralysed by the feeling her "prediction" brought about to do anything but shout in desperation despite knowing it'd be meaningless.

“Don–!!” So she could only exclaim her prayers that this wouldn't finally kill him... yet the words died at the tip of her tongue as her voice trailed off in surprise. Mikoto was witnessing the very opposite of the nightmares that had plagued her the moment they had started to get involved in her business.

She had imagined that Guy and Kuroko going against Accelerator was nothing more than foolishness that would add them to the list of casualties she had caused. She had imagined that, as always, Accelerator would have been the one having the last laugh while she merely crawled on the ground and died; or quite the contrary, her plan would fail and she would be forced to stay alive and witness the death of all of her Sisters as atonement for her sins.

Mikoto's mind had been filled with those negative scenarios and though she had faced Accelerator with the idea that her death would bring about the hopeful outcome she has prayed for; deep inside she was very well aware that it wouldn't and that she was merely indulging herself in calming illusions.

Yet the sight that presented itself to her was none of the gruesome horrors she had been plaguing her mind with; it was the sight of Guy's fist sinking deeply in Accelerator's face in a way that almost mocked the efforts she, a Level 5, had done to even attempt to disturb the albino in his plans with the success rate of a beautiful and perfectly round zero.

It was utterly ridiculous, though the boy had gone through his fair share of merciless beating from Accelerator, the simplicity of that which he took him down with seemed to mock everything Academy City stood for.

And contrary to what she would have believed, Accelerator did not get back up.

This very simple action had been enough to do the strongest Esper in Academy City in.

Mikoto wondered if she hadn't, ultimately, just been completely useless from the get-go and would have caused less trouble just never doing anything, but now was not the time for her to allow herself those thoughts.

(He's... still standing...) Accelerator had collapsed, and though it was obvious that Guy had completely lost grip on his consciousness by now, he was not allowing himself to fall alongside him. He was certainly a lot stronger in that very moment than Mikoto had ever been, or would ever be, in her entire life.

That's why, with a trembling lip, she approached the older boy with small steps before wrapping her arms around his torso, gently easing him down to a lying position on her lap.

“Kuroko. Teleport everyone out of here, I'll call for an ambulance not too far away.” Her tone was serious yet it also bore a certain amount of relief as she observed the collapsed boy's face; it was best if they acted quickly. “And...”

Mikoto finally turned her head around as she absent-mindedly ran a hand through his hair, caught off-guard by the two seeming corpses dangling off Kuroko's shoulders, but quickly putting that aside to slightly blush as she gave Kuroko the most sincere smile she could finally show off after all this time.

“Thanks.”
