Truth Be Told Empty Truth Be Told

Post  Guest Sun Mar 10, 2013 7:40 pm

Troy hated sunny days.

The heat and humidity that the sun cast on him got under his light-deprived skin and crawled about like fire in his veins.

He wouldn't even be out on a day like this if his remote hadn't run out of battery. Why couldn't I have a useful power, like electricity -- or self-stasis? Once he thought about it, that second option would be paradise. He'd be able to lay in bed sleeping as much as he wanted to, and he'd never have to lift a finger or do anything. Ah, how cool would that be? But instead, I have this stupid power that makes me talk to people.

Troy had a tendency to lose himself in his internal complaints, and he'd many a time run into stop signs and poles due to a lack of attention towards his surroundings. This time, however, he was reminded of his location on the sidewalk of a busy street when he gently bumped his elbow into something made of cardboard. For a moment, he thought himself lucky to not be harshly awakened by an obstacle in his path; as soon as he turned around, however, that thought was cast into the wind.

"Oh, crap. Why me?" He asked himself out loud as he watched a thick brown liquid drip from someone's clothing and onto the concrete.

Meirin had been happily enjoying her coffee while on a morning stroll. However, her happy day - and good mood - were abruptly crushed when some dumbass elbowed her cup of coffee. It was just her luck that the lid happened to be a little loose at that moment. While the coffee was extremely hot, due to her Esper ability, it was merely warm. However, what the coffee had done to her white shirt wasn't as pleasant.

"You son of a bitch!" Sakamoto exclaimed loudly. She reached for the boy who had incurred her wrath, intending to beat him within an inch of his life for spilling her coffee. "Get over here!"

The girl whose coffee Troy had accidentally spilled all over her appeared to be extremely pissed off. The aura of anger that came off of her was enough for Troy to jump back in fear of it reaching out and burning him. Coincidentally, his instinctive movement set him just out of the girl's reach as she attempted to grab him, and Troy took that opportunity to turn tail and run.

God dammit, this again? Can I never just have a peaceful day? The reclusive boy asked himself as he shoved through the surprisingly small amount of people on the sidewalk. Troy didn't expect the girl to chase after him, but having seen how mad she'd been at him for spilling her coffee, he made sure to duck around a few corners before looking back to see if anyone was behind him.

Sakamoto gave chase. She wasn't about to let someone who had just spilled her coffee go. "Get back here, you little bastard!!" she yelled, pushing her way through the crowd after the boy. She followed him closely, keeping on his tail. Eventually, he cornered himself - the two were now in an isolated area that few people came to, and there were few places to run.

"Heh. Now I've got you," Sakamoto taunted, cracking her knuckled and menacingly approaching the boy. "Now you're in for a world of pain."

Much to Troy's dismay, the angered lady was, in fact, chasing after him, and he was forced to continue his flight for as long as he could manage. He took advantage of several enclosed alleyways in an attempt to shake his pursuer, but to no avail. God, she's fast.

Eventually, he came to a stop. Dammit... I've got to work on my cardio. Despite thinking this, Troy knew he'd never willingly do any exercising; it was pointless to set any goals for himself, since he'd never wind up crossing them.

The reclusive boy looked up at his surroundings. It was then that he realized he'd been cornered.

He was in a medium-sized lot cleared to make space for a small building or shop. The area was fenced in by several tall chain-link constructions, behind which there was nothing but the sides of other tall buildings. The back wall of the space was created by the rear end of another building that had already been built there. Troy had been in this situation several times before, where the only exit was a narrow alley leading back out onto the streets; a bottleneck. Not even the sun shined very strongly in the lot, and the entire area was overtaken by a solemn sort of gloom despite the unbearably sunny day coating everything else.

Troy considered trying to talk himself out of his situation. Surely a regular teenage girl would listen to reason? "H-hey, you know, don't you think you're overreacting a little?" He put on a nervous face and backed away with his palms held in front of him, towards the girl. "S-surely we can w-work something out, right? You don't need to resort to violence -- anger never gets you anywhere, you know. M-my old man told me that." If this didn't work, he'd have to resort to raw combat -- something he really didn't want to have to do.

Well, that didn't work. Seeing as Troy's predicament hadn't gotten any better, it was safe to assume that negotiation was impossible here. His regular speech skills weren't going to cut it.

"Hey now, cute girls like you shouldn't even be in these filthy back-alley places. There's dirt and bugs everywhere."

I guess I should test her a little first, then. Truth be told, Troy was unsure how effective certain bluffs would be on the girl. All he could do was go about his routine.

"I mean, look at that. On your sleeve -- you've already got a spider on you. I'd get that off quickly, if I were you. I'm pretty sure that one's poisonous."

Meirin hesitated for a moment, then swept her arm with her other hand in an attempt to knock whatever was there loose. Her grin widened; she now looked crazed. "Gee, thanks. Now, where was I? Oh yes, about to kick your ass."

Sakamoto continued to advance. She had closed half the distance already.

Though the girl's action was small, the fact that she'd believed him unconditionally was already a good sign. She didn't even check to see if I was telling the truth. If I can get her to do that some more... this might even be easy. Troy didn't so much as consider whether or not the girl had a power -- he was confident in his ability to get beaten by a female of his age, regardless of whether or not she had anything to hold over him.

Should I make her think I'm more powerful than I am? Intimidation was one way of getting enemies to flee, but only if they were impressible. I don't know much about this girl, but she doesn't seem to be too shaken by anything. Acting like I'm a tough guy will probably just make her take me more seriously. I don't think I could say anything to get her to back off.

Of course, acting too weak wasn't a good idea either. Troy didn't expect the girl pity him. That only left...

I've got to make her be more cautious. Let's see if I can't find a way to limit her movements.

"I guess there's no getting you to leave, huh?" Troy backed further away from the girl until he hit the rear end of the building behind him. "Fine then. How would you like to find out why I led you here?"

Sakamoto laughed. "I can tell you the answer to that. It's so that I could kick your ass without anyone being around to watch," she replied. She continued to advance as she repeatedly palmed her fist.

There wasn't much space left between the two now.

Troy ignored her little comment. "I'll tell you why. I brought you here so the others could watch." A creepy grin came over Troy's face. "Did you think I was alone? I was waiting for someone like you to show up. Didn't you find it suspicious how I brought you to one of the few places in this city that's outdoors on a sunny day and yet still as dark as night?" He spread his arms out wide for emphasis. "They're all around you. Hiding in the shadows. Can you feel their eyes on you?"

Now I have this bluff going, I've got to finish it. Troy's intention was to limit the ways in which she could attack him. Setting something like this up beforehand was crucial if he hoped to get out of his situation relatively unharmed.

"Some of them -- most of them, even, are armed. One wrong move and you'll be nothing more than a bloody smear on the concrete." He chuckled a bit here, somewhat like a villain. "So you want a fight? I'll give you a fight. Be a good girl and give us a fine performance."

Troy put his fists up in front of his face and fell back into the most believable fighting stance he knew.

"But no cheating. If 'they' see anything 'suspicious', they'll open fire immediately." His grin widened.

Of course, the bluff wasn't an easy one to pull. It wasn't very believable, but as long as he could get the girl's senses to alert her of the supposed 'men' in the shadows, his goal would be accomplished.

Something more was needed before the bluff would work. A sacrifice, to make his lie seem all the more real.

As a layman might say, "gotta break some eggs."

"And no running away. Cheating is bad, but forfeit is even worse. This fight was yours to begin with, so make sure to see it through to the very end."

With this statement, Troy cut off all chance of resolving the conflict peacefully -- so long as the girl fell for it.

Meirin's grin got even wider. "Well then, I'll take you all on, then!" she exclaimed, throwing her arms out as if to embrace the challenge. "The more, the merrier!"

With that, she charged towards the bragging boy, fists raised. She threw a wicked punch at the boy's face, her ability already active. She aimed her punch at the boy's forehead, intending to singe him a little with her first punch. And even if the first punch was blocked or dodged, her left arm was ready to go for a body blow, and she wasn't holding back her power in that hand.

Dammit, that didn't work at all! Troy had been almost certain he could fool the girl, and wasn't expecting her to come charging at him without any regard for her own safety.

Troy was no fighter; he couldn't dodge more than a couple of attacks from a regular thug, no less someone who knew how to fight. He managed to throw himself to the side and avoid the girl's first attack (he'd hoped to make her hit the wall behind him), but that was already his limit. After seeing that punch, he had no doubts that she knew what she was doing, and he wasn't about to try and block an attack that would most likely break his arms on impact.

What else can I do to throw her off? At that point, anything that could buy Troy a little more time was welcome, but nobody was about to step in and help him out.

What if I criticize her technique?

"What a shoddy punch, even for a little girl like you. I barely even had to move to get out of the way -- not to mention there was almost no technique to it. You call that 'snap'?"

As he taunted the girl, Troy launched himself off the wall and ran while keeping her in his peripherals. It was a desperate attempt to dodge her attacks, but as a recluse who knew nearly nothing of combat, desperate attempts was all he had.

If I can make her try to correct mistakes that aren't there, I can set her technique off balance and give myself a fighting chance, Troy thought in the foreground of his mind as his subconscious tried to find a viable solution.

Sakamoto laughed. "Well then, I'll stop holding back, since you want me to go all-out so badly!"

With that, Meirin unleashed her power. The air around her hands began to waver as it heated up to over six hundred degrees - and the temperature kept climbing. Meanwhile, Meirin threw herself at the boy, her left hand outstretched in an attempt to grab the boy's face.

"Well then, I'll stop holding back, since you want me to go all-out so badly!"

Troy spun around in time to see the girl's hand right up in front of his face. How fast is this girl? It took a little more than half a second for his reflexes to kick in, and the recluse was forced to make a move.

With a little bit of uncertainty, Troy swung his head to the side while at the same time bringing his right arm up and slamming it towards the girl's elbow in an attempt to keep her from adjusting her aim. It took a moment for him to realize that his face had taken on a rather intense blast of heat, and part of his cheek stung a little as if it were burned. This heat... an esper ability?

He'd figured she had one, judging from her confidence, but he had no clue what it was up until then. Well, I know it can be hot, but what is its true form? The fact that she had a power put him at both an advantage and a disadvantage, evening itself out in a way that Troy was no more concerned than he'd already been.

After all, the existence of a power in his opponent meant nothing to Troy. It was just another strength, and at the same time another weakness.

With a bit of combat reflex Troy didn't know he had in him, the recluse brought his knee up and tried to slam his kneecap into the girl's gut. At the same time, he shouted, "What, having trouble with a wimp like me? You're weaker than I first thought. Even your power can't take me out. Care to fix it and try again?" Troy highly doubted he was physically stronger than the girl, but anything that could buy him time was something he could try.

Meirin chuckled as she dodged Troy's feeble attempt at retaliation, and she immediately countered with a kick of her own (using her left leg), followed by a punch with her right arm. "Nah. You're easy. I'm just getting warmed up. You, on the other hand, clearly can't keep up with me for too much longer!"

The punch was thrown from a low angle, so the kick would mask Sakamoto's arm movements; in addition, the kick was high. Should the kick be ducked, Meirin would backhand Troy across the face, hard. Should the kick connect, she could throw the punch at his gut.

Troy didn't so much as have the reflexes to dodge the first attack, no less the second, and so he was hit with both attacks, leaving him with a hurt gut and a severely bruised jaw. However, it wasn't the hits he was worried about. Troy had been hit a lot in his life by people with more raw strength than this girl, and as such he could take them a lot better than he could dish them out. The attacks were painful, but they didn't even make him double over(no less knock him off balance), and he remained standing while backing up a bit in an attempt to gain some distance.

All Troy was concerned with was not getting killed. If he could defeat her, escape from her, or even act as a punching bag until she tired herself out, any of those solutions were okay with him.

"Your attacks are weak and girly. I didn't even feel a thing," Troy said after making sure his jaw was okay. "Not only that, but you were far too open. Doing multiple attacks at a time like that makes it far too easy to box a person's ears without them even noticing. How do you feel? A little woozy, perhaps?"

It wasn't the strongest lie ever -- especially since Troy had no clue whether or not attempting to do multiple attacks at a time made a person more open -- and as such, the recluse wasn't expecting the girl to suddenly feel off balance. However, even the time she might take to check on her balance was another second or two left alive, and that was plenty of time for Troy to come up with another plan after his last three failed. If my opponent were a bit more normal, I wouldn't be having this much trouble.

Sakamoto frowned. "You're just digging your grave a bit deeper every time you open your mouth, kiddo." She accentuated her words with a few punches. Her ability was active for these, but it wasn't full strength - it was merely there to keep her opponent aware of what she could do.

The coup de grace was a kick aimed at the balls, followed by an attempted grab aimed at Troy's face.

This girl... she doesn't fall for anything, does she? Troy didn't try to dodge her attacks anymore. He took every hit she dealt out. About this heat... I haven't seen any fire, so it's most likely based on temperature control. His breathing was impaired for a few seconds by a punch to the neck, but he held his ground. Most likely, her hands are acting kind of like a microwave and somehow accelerating the molecules of whatever they touch. The question is, can she do it both ways? And either way, can she only do it through her hands? Another shot to one of his shoulders made the corresponding arm feel a little numb, but Troy just stood, un-moving, as her hits made contact. Well, I've got to take a few risks, I guess. She might start getting serious soon and there's no point in getting myself killed. Troy's body was on fire -- almost literally -- but he only opened his eyes for one attack in particular.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?"

His arm was held out in front of him, low to his body while braced by his other arm, and a spot on the forearm looked more red than what could possibly be healthy. "You can hit me all you damn well want to, but a nut shot is going too far." As a guy, Troy would obviously choose a kick to the arm over a kick to the balls, and since he wasn't really doing much up until then, he had easily enough time to block.

"You want to use your power on me so bad? Bring it on, bitch!" With this, he allowed the girl's grab to make contact.

This is a really risky move... but it gives me a better chance than just standing and getting hit.

Meirin grabbed Troy's head and cocked her head. "Alright. Your funeral. Buh-bye~!"

And with that, the smell of burning flesh filled the air. When Meirin withdrew her hand, the skin on Troy's forehead had been melted away, revealing the skull beneath. The area around where her hand had been was charred black and flaking off; what was past that had blisters.

Meirin let go, and the unconscious body fell to the pavement. She took off her overshirt, still stained from the coffee, and threw it over her shoulder. She walked away without looking back.

Well, this doesn't feel very nice. The understatement of the century ran through Troy's head as he watched the girl walk away from his limp form. But, you know... mission accomplished is mission accomplished. He took a small device from his pocket and held it up to his face with the last of his strength. Sure am glad that's over. His thumb wasn't responding very well, so he maneuvered his fingers and managed to hit a button on the item's small number pad. He didn't have a cell phone for the purpose of communication; his parents made him keep one on him so they could call him, and he wasn't about to argue with the people giving him money.

The number on the screen read "7". After a few seconds, the device started dialing automatically. Anti-Skill would be arriving on the scene soon enough.

Troy dropped the phone just as someone on the other end picked up. Their questioning voice speaking words he didn't register served to lull Troy into a deep sleep.

Yet another day I've survived.

A thin smile spread across the face of the recluse as one last thought ran through his mind.

Heh. Such a pity.

And with that, Troy passed out. The next morning he'd find himself in a hospital bed with a bandage wrapped around his perfectly repaired forehead.
