After running through a maze of pathway after fork after pathway, Frenda finally found the target's bodyguard and the so-called assassins already embroiled in combat in an open area. Bullets and concrete were flying throughout the area.

But none of that mattered. If the bodyguard was behind the shield, she could easily penetrate it with the warheads she'd been keeping in reserve. The main problem was the location of the target. She had no idea whether the target was with his bodyguard or was even in the vicinity. All she knew was that the bodyguard was trading blows with the assassins from behind the slabs.

In the end, a rendezvous with Mugino could wait. She had found the opportunity to end this entire mission on her own terms. The plan was already set. The bodyguard and the assassin were too embroiled in their own trading fire to notice her.

The assassins needed to be offed. But the bodyguard was now another story. On the chance that the bodyguard had allowed the target to move through an alternate route while she distracted any possible assailants, killing her was far to dangerous a move for Frenda. She would need that information.

In the end, it would just be best to immobilize her and eliminate the other two. In which case… She grinned as she pulled out two of her handheld warheads from the magical mystery space known as the inside of her skirt.

She would aim the two warheads (with the 'cute' faces) at the assassins and the explosion would cause shockwaves that would break apart the the and cause the shrapnel to fly behind them. If the target was there, it would not be enough to kill him but it would certainly hamper their movements. The assassins on the other hand would probably not be as lucky. That was the plan she thought up as she readied path-type and distance settings onto the warheads.

As she moved out from hiding she ran into the area with the warheads ready to fire at a single stroke of a finger. However, she immediately realized that she had made a miscalculation.

One of the assassins was running straight towards her and collided with her in a predictable fashion. As his legs caught into hers, the two immediately fell. "GAAAAAH!"

At the moment of collision, her arms jerked and her fingers slipped, causing the warheads to immediately launch. The missiles flew into erratic pathways. One headed towards the more distant assassin while the other headed to land in front of the slabs. After all, the origin point had been altered and so had its endpoint. As for the other, it was heading towards the general location of the other assassin. Whether it would hit or not was an entirely different story. After all, the origin point had been altered for that too.

Her back soon hit the floor as the assassin was falling over her.

Sound of the garment like heard from an opening chute, came from the cloak. The dark worsted twill caught dust and rust after it swooped and rolled twice across the metal sieve. The fleshes clothed by dark garment weighed on the floor that weaved from metal. A forged piece of steel and polymer caused a short ‘bang’ as it impacted.

Yasuo stood on his knee after he took a dive and rolled. An odd sensation he felt threw him off the sense of time and reality, it felt moisture, hot and cold; accompanied by a sore, crushing upon his both temple.  The only hand he had and capable of doing as he wished smeared over that sensation which was around his belly. He lifted that sweaty hand affront to his eyes.

His palm remained motionless till a drop of his sweat fell onto the red pond of stagnant thick liquid.

He laughed with a deep and coarse voice he involuntarily forced out from his throat, he laughed over that reddish palm and cut wound across his belly.

“Must it be like this …. Must it be like this ….” Withered and rough sound uttered from his windpipe, “So every strength I long for ….. must be proven ….. by the sweat and blood of dedication.”

“Right” he affirmed, “I’m worthy” he asserted.

He smeared that liquid on his palm over his face until the pale face was no longer a pale face.

“Aha…. Ahaa…. Ahaaahaaaaa,” a deep grasp for air divided between his voice, he glanced to the stone-crafted arrow head stuck in the wall and back to its sender, “We’ll see.”

He clenched the hand that was drenched in blood into a furious fist and pounded it frantically on his wound, a pain he chose to look away and rise from it.

"Nothing will stand in our way."

He exhausted through his vents, every micron of it was filled with innocence in the form cruelty, a gift which mankind grants to itself.

No complication, no contradiction. Only execution.

The end was near, the revelation was coming closer. He was dying to see its end.

He snatched the holy sword he uses to slay fiends infidels with his newfound force, the instrument of his affection. A tool once made man equaled, a tool that speaks a universal language. He rose from his knee.

He saw the tritium sight, he aimed to the girl’s head, she who lay on her shields.

That was nothing to stop him from pulling the trigger.

Or was it?

Ignition screamed across the room, the combustion sent the rocket-shaped projectile towards him. On its tip a cute face drawn by its owner he saw, was a mark that he or she took the matter of death as a joke or something entirely meaningless to him or her. It was no time to contemplate, he was not going to let that face kiss him just now.

It made its way closer and passed the slabs, he drew the sight on it. He squeezed the trigger before his eyes caught up with the new target.

The projectile exploded not long after its way passed the stone slabs, spitting its fragment into every direction.

He drew himself away from the blast in where he stood, but at this rate, he was late for quick maneuvers.

Slugs pierced through his skins, in his back and the back of his right leg. He fell to his knee once again but this time the heat was so much for turn-based and contemplation, his grasp for air once more, signified pain and wince. He fired his pistol to the back without any aim until it ran dry and took dive to his right for cover. He lied on his own soon-to-be pool of blood, his time was now and it was running out.

“How’s that for starter?”

A Certain Rifle-less Sniper

Tsukino's aim had been all but perfect, but he was a step too slow to fire. Before the bullet could pierce the girl's slender throat, the walls she controlled had covered the gap and deflected his shot. Doubtless, the near death experience had her sweating, but he didn't believe that something of this level would suffice to disturb her. After all, despite her age and inexperience, she was surely a professional. Unlike his partner, she conducted herself calmly, and took the most efficient path to securing her objective. Yes, very much unlike his partner...

"GAAAH!"

He looked on with mild surprise as Yasuo completely abandoned all cover by leaping straight into the air, and took advantage of his elevation to shoot over the girl's walls, ignoring her defenses entirely. It was an utterly suicidal move, and he would be all but defenseless once he hit the ground, but the shrill yell that echoed throughout the chamber assured him that at least a single strike had made contact. And to top it off, every single last one of his weapons were almost stupidly high quality, so he could be sure that the unfortunate girl was in a bad way.

However, there was no way she wouldn't go down without a fight. He heard a wrenching sound, and after sparing a quick glance to see what it was, Tsukino couldn't stop himself from biting out the smallest of curses. The girl had regained control of the stone chunks she'd sent flying into the controls he'd been messing with earlier, and sent them straight to where Yasuo lay on the floor. There was no way he'd get out of that unscathed. But on the other hand, while her attention was focused on him, the girl's defenses would be weakened by the divide of her concentration. There was no telling how much, so he'd simply have to find ou-

"GAAAAAH!"

Tsukino had been backing further and further away this entire time, so when his legs were suddenly caught in and entangled with another's his momentum quickly sent the two of them went tumbling to the floor. Judging from the sound of the scream, it was a young girl, but he'd heard another noise amidst the tumble that instantly sent him into high alert. It was the high pitched scream of warheads launching.

"Dammit!"

He had no idea what was going on, but he could be sure of one thing. The one he was currently laying on top of was a threat, to have such high power weaponry. Acting quickly, he rolled off of her and got onto one knee, then quickly fired one, two, and three shots right into her center mass. Even if she was wearing a bulletproof vest, the heavy impact would at least break a rib, if not pierce the material entirely.

Rin had underestimated the condition the gun worshiper was left in, believing he would've given up and handed his soul toward his demise. Even if she were to be killed, it is impossible for him to live to see the success of his mission. She didn't understand why he was willing to go to such lengths. Was Yasuo so deluded as to thinking if he ended this quickly he would be saved? He has too many wounds, including the fresh one across his torso. This fight will be his grave, even if he is the only human still breathing.

"Kh...!" Rin felt surrounded. There was a sniper, and what she interpreted as a suicidal gun man, desperately trying to do what he can before time runs out. She had no actual firearms, although having experience with them. She found it much more effective to simply carry equipment that helped her utilize her power. Her daggers, her sword, all complimenting her variant of Telekinesis. Knowing she might need to take a more drastic action, most likely needing to use the darkness to sink back into hiding. Rin quickly drew her blade and sliced the top slab in half horizontally, grabbing at the top with her good arm, and focused on levitating it upwards quickly and toward a large white tank, most likely either part of the water clean up or water storage at the very least.

However, as she was lifted, off the ground and away from her original position, a loud hiss is heard as two bright lights are suddenly flashed from the Sniper's position, and in nearly an instant, two explosive warheads are sent toward Yasuo and Rin's former position. At that point, Rin was roughly 10m off the ground, so she could see the bright explosions clearly, as shrapnel and metal cut at her arms and some of her clothing. "GHHH!" She gritted her teeth, wasn't expecting the Sniper to have such weaponry with them, making the assumption a third party hadn't joined into the fight. She took mild damage, but due to the sudden explosion, she nearly lost her concentration, and even crashed on the top of the white tank, rather than making a decent landing. "GAhaaa!" She cried out as her wounded shoulder collided with the metal of the tank, however since both her opponents are on the ground, if she remained prone, she couldn't be shot at easily as she can merely keep her head down.

Rin's slabs were completely destroy, complete and useless rubble, but if she hadn't left early, she would've taken significantly more damage than before. Maybe even losing a limb or being obliterated by the very objects that protected her. But thanks to her adaptive thinking in a situation where she's surrounded, and by luck do to the fact she didn't even notice warheads were being fired, she escaped. "W-what the...?!" When she peaked over, she could see a struggle, of the sniper and...what she can only make out as a young blonde female. Instantly, she putted the pieces together, the warheads and the fact that a young European girl is down here in the first place. "Tch..!" This was just great. Wonderful even. Not only did she have to deal with the assassins, but the psycho girl with the explosives was here. She'll lose in a fight with her and she hasn't been able to communicate with her partner. He could even be dead right now. Assuming this girl didn't come alone in the shafts....Rin is at a point where the mission seems impossible. While conflicted, she quickly cuts her long concrete square into four equal squares. If she stops attacks the assassins, she'll have to deal with Frenda. If she attacks Frenda, she's still at a heavy disadvantage. "...." With no other options she chucked one slab at full speed toward Yasuo, and one toward Tsukino. She has made a decision, whether good or bad, it was all she can consent with. With this, she aimed for their torso's with a heavy blunt attack, hoping to disorient, if not knock out one or both of them.

Absolute chaos seemed to ensue. Explosives, slabs, people and bullets were flying everywhere. If one wanted to describe the second law of thermodynamics, the constant increase of entropy, one need not look far from this situation for a perfect metaphor.

"GBHH!"

The sound of the wind being knocked out of her lungs from the much larger man landing on her escaped before the man made a cry of worry at the sound of the warheads flying. Luckily, the man did not stay on her long. He had rolled off to one side.

It was obvious what the man was going to do next. There was no point for Frenda in wondering whether or not the warheads hit the target. She had to immediately get out of that situation. He was going to shoot. With the half second she needed to let her diaphragm start functioning properly again passed, she immediately got up kneeling and jumped back.

With her legs muscles in full burst, she started to jump back only to feel two lines of burns passing down her right thigh. Her right leg gave out and she immediately found herself tumbling back, rolling until she hit the wall while hearing the sound of explosions in the distance. As her tumble stopped, she got into a kneeling position again and noticed three bullets lying in front of her, one of which had missed.

However, the second two had grazed her right leg, causing burns.

Grazed her leg.

Her legs.

"In the end, I can see that a brute you can't respect a girl's charm point." She muttered audibly. While speaking, she immediately pulled out one of her specialty 'cute'-face warheads from the hyperspace within her skirt and took aim.

"That ABSOLUTELY will not fly with me." Pure rage seethed through her lips, entangled with those words. With that rage, she immediately let the next warhead loose straight towards Tsukino, leaving him having to deal with a slab coming from one direction and a powerful anti-tank warhead coming to him from the front.

She would blow him to smithereens and utterly crush him.

Re: [SS] Unendliche Jagd (Unending Hunt)

Post  Yamaguchi Hiromi on Thu Jan 21, 2016 9:09 pm

The current scene could be described in one word: Chaos.

In this chaotic field, there was one man on his knees. He was struggling to get up on his feet, but his eyes never left his surroundings. He knew too well, how defenseless he was at the moment, and that any of his enemies would not waste such a golden opportunity to finish him off, either that knives-wielding esper or that blond foreigner who just joined the battlefield.

From the look the other girl was giving her, he guessed that they were also enemies. So this foreigner should be part of the other Team, an ally of that crazy monster and her calm friend. It would be a disaster if they caught up with her and joined the battlefield too. It would probably reduce the chances of this mission’s success to zero.

Yes. He was not thinking of the chances of his “survival”. He already realised and accepted the fact that this place would be his grave. But...

He was not given the chance to finish his line of thought, as his eyes got on the slight hesitance of the bodyguard girl. He understood that she was deciding on her next move, and realised that she would likely target him in all cases, seeing he’s an easy prey. However… he found himself in the face of two options: Either he puts all of his effort into dodging, with the possibility of her striking again immediately. In that case, he wouldn’t possibly be able to provide enough strength and momentum to dodge successfully a second time… or he could...

Abandon his futile try to escape, and work on taking the girl down with him.

If he died alone, and left Tsukino facing both of the girls at the same time, then his ally would surely have no chances of victory, but… If he had to face only one enemy, then… then maybe there would still be a chance for this mission to be a success.

Wasn’t it obvious which of the choices would be more beneficial? A lot of people have called him “suicidal” in the past, and he was sure his enemies were probably thinking the same right now, but he somewhat took pride in that very suicidal part of him.

‘Well, if I’m going to die anyway, I would prefer to play the part at least, you know? It isn’t cool to die out of character after all.'

He secretely drew out his smallest pistol and hid under his coat, taking advantage of the girl’s preocupation at devising her strategy, as not to let her notice his slight movement.

‘Oh Great Lords, your weak servant gladly offers his llife as a sacrifice, so, please make this one shot reach, and take down the evil doer.’

Just as he silently prayed for a miracle, just as the slab was launched his way, he aimed for her chest, taking once again advantage of the slab hiding part of the girl’s vision field… and...

Bang. Thunk. Fa-thud.

A series of successive sounds played in the background.
In the battle field, a black silhouette could be seen laying on the ground.

‘I guess this is all for me, hah… This is not cool, not cool at all… Dying off after getting hit with a slab... painfully ridiculous.’

He knew his time was getting near, those were his last minutes, if not seconds. He was surprisingly calm, too calm, even. As if he already accepted his fate.

‘Ah… it’s getting blurry…’

Nonetheless, he refused to die just yet. He refused to pass-out. His body wouldn't move, he couldn't even breathe properly, but he struggled to keep his eyes open.

‘I’ve…got to… see the end of this… I have to… make sure…’

It was a foolish struggle. He knew that well.

He forced just his eyes to look one more time at his enemy, and what he saw was...

Tsukino Arata

The sound of guns firing. The sound of debris flying through the air. The sound of a rocket being fired.

Everything...

Everything sounded so far away.

The slab that would crush his body and rend his bones, was it mere centimeters away, or kilometers? The rocket that would burn his flesh and scatter his body, would it detonate in seconds or hours?

He couldn't tell. He couldn't tell anything at all. All he knew, was that he had failed. Success, ever elusive, had slipped from his grasp, and cold death had come to take its place. There was no telling when it had happened, but at this place and at this moment, he was certain of that alone.

The slab flying at him from afar could possibly be avoided, but the rocket had been fired from far too close. Even if he dodged, he would still get caught in the explosion. And even if the explosion didn't kill him, whatever damage it dealt would certainly be enough to erase all possibility of him escaping.

There was no chance of him escaping. There was no chance of him completing the mission he had accepted. Even as he felt the world slowing to a stop around him, he was more certain of that than he had ever been of anything else in his life. And faced with that, he took the most natural action. It was the same thing he had done time and time again. It was the secret to his survival until this moment, and it was the cause of his death here.

As all the chaos and destruction which had sounded so far away until then seemed to come rushing forward all at once, Tsukino ran. He turned away from his partner, from his target, from the bodyguard and the foreigner, and ran to the nearest exit from the room. Just like he had fled after every shot he'd ever fired, just as he had failed to run after his failure here.

Frantically, desperately, Tsukino ran from not from his fellow killers, but the very possibility of violence.

Even as the flame from the explosion enveloped him.

«*siigh*…so this is all…?»

Mugino Shizuri’s voice was expressing all the disappointment she felt about this outcome.

She had arrived in the middle of a battlefield that had just passed the peak of excitement, now being covered in the body of the dead and defeated. Unfortunately this kind of scene wasn’t the one she had been looking forward to at all.

«That piece of shit…wasting my time so much that I didn’t even get to blow off the stress he left me with…»

Indeed, that mercenary she had crossed paths with only a mere moments ago had taken quite an extensive amount of her time. Not only had he taken that time, he had even been a handful to handle, quite a hard kill and none of the entertaining sort.
After their meeting her dress had been ruined, covered in stains, burned at places and torn at others. The same could be said about her precious skin. Her face, arms and legs, even the hair wasn’t spared.

And now…

…due to that man’s actions…

…there was nothing left.

Gritting her teeth in anger, Mugino’s glance wandered around the area. A fleeing man had been caught in an explosion, one was awaiting death just in that instance, desperately clinging on to something she didn’t know anything about. And lastly there was her comrade that appeared to have fought to her fullest.

So was that truly all there was left after the end of the party…?

Like a woman that had arrived too late for the final clearance sale, Mugino Shizuri, just for a moment, felt purely unsatisfied.

And then that lack of satisfaction exploded into rage.

Barrages of green light flying everywhere and anywhere.

As she shouted out her no longer containable or reasonable emotions, she would simply eat away at everything. Nothing should prevail. Nothing should remain. ALL SHOULD JUST GO TO WASTE.

"Dammit, everything has gone to hell..." Rin bit her lips as Frenda's explosions echoed throughout the facility,  Rin feeling small bits of concrete and rubble land on her back like sand. She didn't take anything direct and the explosives weren't aimed for her, so she was completely safe on top of the water tank. Though because of the explosions, her eyes were trained on the young blonde girl with the explosives. While she can easily be taken down, Rin does not have an effective counter against her bombs. A direct fight would lead to her own death, surely. In a situation against her, it is smarter to use guerrilla warfare tactics, or ways to engage by indirect means.

Rin, however, being distracted by all this would soon turn toward the gun worshiper, to check his condition but as soon as she did.

BANG!

"...?!" Rin felt the phantom pain of a bullet going through her chest, imagining that bullet had gone through her heart, but in reality the bullet barely missed her. Her long locks kicked up, rippled in a circle like water and back as the bullet flew right by her neck and through her long strands. They weren't pulled, but cut off entirely as several strands of hair are taken by the wind, the feeling of heat going down her back from the bullet. "...." She almost died. She wouldn't have been able to hide or dodge, but due to the condition of the shooter, and a little bit of luck, she escaped death once again.

Rin makes a huge sight of relief as the man dropped his gun and seemed lifeless at this point. Perhaps this was a warning of sorts. One in which that she has outstayed her welcome. The mission was already a failure. There is a much more difficult enemy to face, and her partner is missing in action as far as she can tell. Still, her target was still under a block of concrete in the sewers. Will they even find him? Or will he be stuck down there until he crawls through an exit pipe. She wasn't sure.

However, once a beautiful woman entered the room, giving a vibe of blood lust, Rin froze in place and scooted back a bit as he watched her. She gave an expression of disappointment as she stepped slowly into the room, trying to calm herself.

«That piece of shit…wasting my time so much that I didn’t even get to blow off the stress he left me with…»

"..." Rin can only think of her missing partner as the two assassins were with her the entire time. She wasn't sure if she could take those words as his official time of death, or if he actually got away or perhaps abandoned the mission. "...Did he abandon me by myself." Rin growled under her breath, as she can be a bit trusting toward her co-workers, especially when they were capable of holding their own. Rarely do they actually abandon her to her own survival as either the mission would be complete before then or they would already be injured to an extent where they aren't fit for battle. "...I shoul-"

Before Rin could mutter her next move, the well endowed woman sudden went on a berserk rage, forming great elegant beams of destruction, taking her rage out on the building, rather than some stress ball or simply punching a wall as she has witnessed. Was she planning to bring the whole building down? There's not way Rin could realistically take one two destructive mercenaries. She doubted she could win against the European, but this one? It's just futile.

However, before Rin could even flee or move away from her spot, one of those beam came directly at her, like a snake snapping at it's prey. It was too quick and too sudden that she couldn't even gasp as she felt it melt through the tank and engulf her body. She couldn't scream in pain, nor could she even feel anything as it ripped through her body. This wasn't fair, she would think to herself. Before a great ball of fire and smoke turn her into dust and ash in an instant death, as he broken blade, half melted and burnt would be sent flying, colliding right at the feet of Frenda, almost cutting her leg.

KABOOM!

The sound of the explosion rocked the side of the room. The man who had damaged Frenda's precious legs was definitely dead. Without a doubt, he had been consumed by the conflagration let loose by Frenda's warhead. He was likely not an Esper. He would likely have no chance of finding a way out of it.

No matter what, the man was dead and Frenda felt a wave of satisfaction pulse through herself. The man had attacked her charm point after all. He may not have screamed at the moment of his death, however, Frenda could take solace in the fact that she witnessed the moment where she had conquered some stupid man's destiny.

Now all that was left was to take care of the other two. At least, that was what she wanted to do. However, fate seemed to have other plans as the sound of footsteps began to echo.

«*siigh*…so this is all…?»

It was the characteristic voice of ITEM's leader, the beautiful and proud Level 5, Mugino Shizuri.

«That piece of shit…wasting my time so much that I didn’t even get to blow off the stress he left me with…»

It was the characteristic tone of boredom, annoyance, and frustration that only Mugino could carry.

Mugino was happening upon the battlefield and from the looks of it, she was definitely not pleased. In fact, her irritation only seemed to grow as she made the quick observation of what was happening.

Frenda knew exactly what was going to happen. Mugino was about to go on a rampage…and she would get caught up in the middle of it.

Frenda did not want to let herself get caught up in that. After all, she could die or worse, Mugino would shoot Meltdowner and Frenda's shapely legs could be caught up in the barrage. What a terrible death that would be.

In a simple fight-or-flight response, Frenda immediately broke into a run. She ran and ran until she was next to Mugino and then…

The sound of pure, unbridled destruction reverberated throughout the room. As she turned back around, to face the surreal sight of beams flying everywhere, a broken blade flew and landed right next to her feet.

Frenda could only be grateful for the fact that her legs were not damaged any more than the two burn lines she incurred from the one she killed.

At this point, though, it was safe to say that everybody else aside from the two ITEM girls was likely dead. Blown to smithereens, one way or another. Frenda really wanted to stop Mugino who seemed to have forgotten that they wanted the target alive. However…this was Mugino…

If the target was here, he was likely dead by Mugino's hands. If he was not, then Mugino killed their one link to the target's current whereabouts.

It was a lose-lose situation either way, so it was best to just let Mugino know. "Muginoooooo…I think we just lost our last connection to the target here…"

Failure.

That was the first word to come to his mind, the first realisation that hit him.

A chain of events played in front of him in a span of a second.

He missed the shot.

Tsukino had been caught up in an explosion.

And the two girls are still alive.

Was his life not enough of a sacrifice to his gods for the mission to succeed?

He refused to die like this, to die in vain.

Wasn’t there something he still could do?

However, his body seemed to have other plans, for it only grew weaker. His hand grew numb and dropped the gun. His eyes closed on their own no matter how much he struggled to keep them open. The only thing he could still do was to hear and think. But he knew that even those would soon vanish too.

‘A miracle…’, he begged one last time, still clinging to that small hope.

At that very instant,...

«*siigh*…so this is all…?»

‘?’

«That piece of shit…wasting my time so much that I didn’t even get to blow off the stress he left me with…»

‘This voice…? The crazy hag?’

Everything before his eyes was pitch black. He could see naught. But he perfectly recognised the voice. How could he forget the woman who nearly killed him, the first person he aknowledged as his rival, however he knew how far from his league she really was - admitting that was no a easy task for him - in reality.

He, however, was amused. If he could still move, his shoulders would be shaking in a silent chuckle. He knew all too well where this situation was heading to. A moment later, at hearing the sound of explosions and the barrage of the lazer beams striking repeatedly, he realised that his guess had been right.

The monster went berserk.

A ‘Thud’ followed shortly after.

The knife-wielding girl was dead, and her body had hitten the floor.

He couldn’t see. But he could perfectly picture the whole scene in his mind. Lazers flying everywhere, destroying whatever happened to be on their way.

If the target was still where the two assassins detected him, he was probably killed by now. If he was lucky enough to have moved further into the tunnel, it would be just a matter of time until the concrete-and-iron-piercing beams reached him. No hideout is enough to protect him against such firepower.

‘Ha… ha… haha…’

It was over.

‘Hahahahahaha!’

The mission was a success.

Tsukino died.

Yasuo was on his way to.

They killed no one of the Esper Team.

They did not reach the target.

Nonetheless…

Even if they were not who did it, even if their enemies brought their loss with their hands…

This still did not negate one simple fact.

The target was dead.

No matter how it was done or what was lost in order to realise it...

Their mission was a success.

He felt like he was freed from a huge burden.

‘I wonder if Kisue-sama had already expected this outcome since the very beginning…’

Kihara, I don’t get it. Why did you choose me as your servant? I am not any smarter or stronger than the people you have rejected before.

...

Hey, Kihara, have you ever noticed how perfect guns are?

...

Kihara, you are not making fun of what I am saying…?

Kihara, you... made this pistol for me?

...

Kihara-sama, I killed my first target successfully!

Kihara-sama, did I ever tell you how much I love guns? I did, didn’t I? Haha.

Kihara-sama, when are you going to give me a new task? I miss the smell of powder and blood!

Kihara-sama, this job was so easy and not challenging at all!

Kihara-sama, am I now strong enough to change the world?

Kisue-sama, I took care of that traitor like you instructed.

Kisue-sama, you are the only human being who understands me.

Kisue-sama, I am the man who will change the world and protect you.

Kisue-sama.

...

Kisue-sama…

‘Kisue-sama…’

The man was reminiscing of his past with his beloved master, Kihara Kisue, and his ever changing attitude towards the girl as time went by. Even if their relationship was that of a master and servant, even if he adressed her with formality and respect given the difference of their status, he really considered her to be his first and last, his one and only, friend.

By now, he was no longer hearing anything. Only his inner voice resonated within him, waiting for his soul to be taken away.

‘In the end… I protected nothing.. I changed nothing…’

He was going to break his promise.

‘Kisue-sama is so smart and strong… But she is also an idiot and fragile… Her strong devotion to her ambitions attracts a lot of enemies… Will she be alright without me cleaning up things after her?’

The girl would find herself all alone again.

‘Would she be upset, I wonder? Or would she be happy to have finally gotten rid of such a failure?’

‘Come to think of it… She has never cried. No matter how much hurt she was, she had always kept it inside. She’s strong… unlike me. I wonder... if she is crying right now…’
, he thought as he felt a warm liquid running down his cheeks.

‘Ah… It’s cold…’, the man was shivering, his lips were trembling, and a cold sweet was covering his body.

‘But… I’m happy… Kisue-sama… that I met you… I fullfilled all of the missions you gave to me… So I pray... that you are happy too… I apologize... I have to go... But... the gods will protect you on my behalf… for you are my most precious person… so fear naught… Kisue-sama… you are not alone… Fare thee well...’, those last words came to his mind, and a satisfied smile was drawn on his lips. In the end, he was thankful for the life he was granted.

‘Thank you… my saviors.’.

And with that, all life left his body.

And after the downpour, there remained the causalities.

"Muginoooooo…I think we just lost our last connection to the target here…“

Besides the two ITEM girls there remained not a single trace of life. Everyone else had faded in the cruel inferno of green light. Everything that wasn’t weak enough to simply be annihilated by the heat of the green light remained molten and eaten into. The vaporised water, the molten masses of steel and iron and the gas that had ignited and exploded, all had caused a tremendous increase in temperature.

That blazing heat stood in contrast to the coldness of death that had reached out to anywhere.

Her heavy breathing resounded throughout the otherwise silent space.

The #4 had finally come to a hold, no longer seeking compensation for the fulfilment she had been robbed of long in advance.

It seems the words has finally hit her mind.

The silence she gave in response underlined that for once she was rendered unable to avoid the blame.

«You think he would have survived in the first place? Keh. As if ITEM was ever cut out to serve as babysitters.»

Clicking her tongue she actually revealed a truth that wasn’t too far off from reality. Never had it been ITEM’s purpose to secure people or even keep their asses safe. That had never been what the Meltdowner-AIM-Stalker-Combination had been designed to be used for. Whoever had given them those orders was likely as behind as the one that had considered mercenaries more than just the cannon fodder they were compared to those single human armies this city slowly but surely mass produced.

«…to think that woman didn’t even veto this job…»

Drowning her own frustration by pushing the blame at the ones responsible for this order to be even given out, the beauty that stood atop all battlefields bluntly stepped along a path amidst the oceans of molten mass, quite like taking a merry walk on a Sunday afternoon.

«Contact the others and tell them we’re done.»

Letting a final order slip, there was nothing left to pay with time for.

«Oh and Frenda. Please make sure to pretend what happened was just a side effect of the fierce battle, ye~s?»

Once the beams had finally subsided, Frenda finally de-tensed her body. Aside from the heat permeating through the area due to the melted metals of the area, the heated air, and the steam rising from various locations.

This heat would definitely not be good for her skin. Frenda picked up the end of her shirt and tried waving it around, with an utterance about how hot it was. However, she soon stopped when she realized that she was only giving the hot air more contact with her body.

«You think he would have survived in the first place? Keh. As if ITEM was ever cut out to serve as babysitters.»

As much as Frenda wanted to throw a tsukkomi at Mugino's dismissal, she could not help but acknowledge that Mugino was correct. After all, ITEM was more specialized in elimination missions. What other reason would there be to form a group using their roster of members.

It was frustrating but at this point, all hope for getting paid for a job well done had gone out the window. Frenda could no longer motivate herself to care about the job anymore. She could only stand and be annoyed that all of her hard work had gone down the tubes.

«…to think that woman didn’t even veto this job…»

«Contact the others and tell them we’re done.»

"Understooooood." Frenda held that last note in order to emphasize her newfound apathy. As she picked up the phone and started to dial, she heard one last thing from Mugino.

«Oh and Frenda. Please make sure to pretend what happened was just a side effect of the fierce battle,ye~s?»

She slowly turned her head around at her boss's orders. With a stutter in her words and a skipped beat in her heart, she could only agree to Mugino's demand. "U-Understood, ma'am."

Everyone had given up hope on their respective employments and left, dissatisfied, dejected and, in some cases, deceased. Nobody wanted to stay a minute longer in this dimly lit network of shafts. The scene was once an empty and deserted water treatment facility. Now, it was an empty, deserted and completely wrecked beyond recognition. Holes, debris and cooled molten metal covered the scene like some pretentious dish of a fine dining restaurant. It was over. The whole thing was fucked, in every sense of the word.

However, it was not over. The pipes that were busted open revealed no human remains in them.

That was because there wasn't anybody in them. The man who should have been there was now, some time later, steadying his breath and getting ready for the final sprint to the exit. Just a little more, he reminded himself. Just a little more.

Then I can save her.

Recovering his energy, he remained in the shadows, steeling his resolve. Once more he checked for signs of life. Living in the Dark Side had trained him well in detecting presences; a skill everyone required to survive in such a world.

Seeing none, he took a step forward, then, like a bolt of lightning, he sprinted out towards his freedom. His speed was not that of superior athletes, but he was definitely in shape, which was a prerequisite for surviving in this world when he was a lone man.

This was the final step. He absolutely could not afford to mess this up. He knew the people who wanted him were using the surveillance systems that had just caught sight of him. They had probably received reports of him being dead now, but Katsushige refused to take any chances.

Amidst that light of hope marking the end of the tunnel, a dark cloud appeared.

A lone shadow had placed itself, blocking the light, erasing all hope.

Another man had appeared, clad in a dark suit coloured like concrete. The tie around his neck was sloppily bound, the suit of cheap quality, definitely not a pick befitting that one. And much like his suit, his hair seemed like concrete, devoid of colour, aged, lifeless.

«Greetings, Tsukasa Katsuhige.»

Tall like a mountain that man’s height went far beyond that of the fleeing one. The colour of concrete, paired with the strong shape of his body gave out the image of a wall, impervious.

His voice and face as devoid of life and joy as concrete, he spoke. He wasn’t even shaved properly were there mess rests of beard covering his face. There was only one way to describe this one: A human void.
But even while being a void that man had a familiar smell on himself.

«We both know that this was never destined to end the way you imagined it, don’t we?»

He had never seen this man all throughout his life and even if he had, there was nothing that would allow for his memory to distinguish him from the many he had seen.

He was perfect for that kind of profession. Perfect for this role he would be about to take.

Expecting a gunshot, the man in the black suit skidded to a halt, raising his briefcase to defend himself. Black and Grey stood across each other, staring the opposition down.

This man in grey was completely blank, while the man in black was equally stiff and rigid.

"No, I didn't imagine myself succeeding at all."

There was a massive difference between thinking it and doing it. He was trying to do the escaping part, but he was thinking he would fail. He was pushed to the point where it was all or nothing, and he had placed his bets appropriate.

"Now then He started. Let's get to the point. Are you here for this? He pointed a finger at his own neck.

This? Then he pointed to his briefcase.

Reaching into his jacket, he fished out a jet-black pistol-shaped item with a barrel far too narrow to fit a bullet. Lifting it, he pointed it right at the man, but did not pull the trigger nor show any intent to. His poker face did not budge one bit. This?

...Or all three together?"

A face like concrete. If one would claim that Tsukasa Katsuhige was proud of his pokerface the same could be said about that man as well.

There was only silence between the two of them after Tsukasa had pulled out his weapon.

Tension was building up, however only in the space between the two.

That man didn’t budge. His composure didn’t falter. He remained the same as before, cold as concrete.

«I would prefer to avoid the last one. There has already been enough pointless violence.»

Confidence. Was he wearing a protector underneath his suit or was it some other trump card he held? Whatever it was, that man didn’t seem to even consider being hurt in this scenario.

«However, to speak honest: We are not after the contents of the suitcase either. What we are after is something entirely different. As a matter of fact, what we want is what is inside that head of yours.»

Slowly but surely his words were coming to a conclusion, opening a different path.

«Only in the eventuality its contents are of remarkable value, though.»

Re: [SS] Unendliche Jagd (Unending Hunt)

Post  Sogiita Gunha on Tue Mar 22, 2016 4:43 pm

His objective was clear, and so was Katsushige's.

"You want information, huh?"

Lifting the suitcase slightly, he turned attention towards it. "This suitcase contains payment meant for my bodtguards, but I don't suppose you're taking a bribe.  However, the real, precious content inside is information. Information I know and information you want."

As for the reason he is wanted? He discovered this information was linked to a bit more than he had bargained for. With 'a bit' adjusted to terms fitting for the Dark Side of the Academy City.

"If it's an explanation you want, I could answer a few short specifics, but you and I both know I don't exactly have the time to sit and chat. I suspected it might come to this, so I prepared a second bribe in advance."

Keeping his weapon pointed at the man, he used the hand holding his briefcase to fish into a pocket and take out a single SD chip. Anyone who had even a little bit of knowledge of Academy City's technology would know that this little chip had quite impressive storage capability.

"I'm not so stupid as to give you my one and only copy. This here is what people sent you here for, and either want to know, or don't want me to know. Like most people trying to get out, I ended up with more than I bargained for."

Without even waiting for the other man to accept, he tossed it over with a flick of his fingers. He knew this man was good enough to catch it, and Katsushige's aim was not off. If a device was used to check the data on the spot, there would be no infections in the card. Katsushige knew who to flip off and who not to.

"Body Tissue Reconstruction. Sounds strange for a businessman like me to get into, eh? If you look inside, you'd know why it's wanted."

Because this didn't just mean the reconstruction of lost body tissue, it also included reconstruction of the brain. Replicating biological age, memory, knowledge... But this was Academy City. There was a dangerous secret in there that was not fully shown, yet with a few steps in the right (or wrong, depending on viewpoint) direction would lead to the specifics of the one thing that absolutely must not leave Academy City:

An Esper's Powers.

By taking the information, even if he did not have anything pertaining to one of the most dangerous secrets, he had become a target for elimination just for having something similar. Having the crime pinned on him made it much more believable.

The question remains on why a man like Katsushige would bother with such information in the first place. Did he intend to sell it in the name of furthering the medical industry outside? What use for it did he really have, if not monetary? All profiles stated that Katsushige was, like most of the residents on the Dark Side, not some righteous man, who worked with the clear goal of money.

But what people didn't know, was that he was putting his money in order to fund his escape and to get exactly this! Unfortunately, the sudden escalation of the situation had put him into this tight spot!

Yet, his face still remained as frozen as the man in front of him. If he were to make a dash, he would just be killed. Katsushige knew this. With the probability that the man would take the information and just kill him for having outlived his use, Katsushige kept his weapon out and ready.

As if following up the catch mechanically the man brought forth a phone like device from his pants’ pocket, plugging the SD card into it, then pausing for a few seconds. His eyes didn’t even turn towards the screen for a slight instance, digging their focus deep into the existence that was Tsukasa Katsuhige.

Then after exactly 45 seconds had passed, he removed the SD card from the device, putting both away in different pockets.

«Sufficient.»

Green lights. The path had opened. The wall would open.

Just as the man was stepping aside, allowing the light to reach Tsukasa, he opened his mouth a last time. His lips moved, announcing words of good will…?

«Are you familiar with the name Tsukino Arata?»

A dramatic pause to raise the value of the rhetoric question.

«A famous sniper working within this city. He was a frightening assassin, of amazing skill. His success rate on missions is perfect, well nearly perfect. It is said that he belongs to the top class in his trade. He and a man called Kurosaki Yasuo were hired to assassinate you.»

Information for information, but what was the purpose of these bits supposed to be?

«He died 12 minutes ago, if I recall right.»

Another pause, meant to mark conclusion?

«However there is another big name in the world of snipers. Sunazara Chimitsu. A man from the outside, supposedly even more skilled than Tsukino and of greater fame, as well as price.»

Or was it just the beginning?

«Said Sunazara is currently in position outside of Academy City, preparing to lock on to Tsukasa Katsuhige’s head the second he would reveal himself out in the open. Besides him representatives of four other people’s interests have gathered on possible escape routes. Of course none of them are considered our allies.»

He knew it all. Claiming not to be aligned with any of those mentioned, that man still was aware of every single one of them. If asked for further detail, it didn’t seem unlikely that he could list anything noteworthy just on a whim.

«I can see why ITEM was ordered to capture you inside the tunnel network. Even they should not be able to protect a human life when clashing with that great a number of opposing parties.»

This final comment should mark their parting. That man had been given everything he would grow interested towards, so there was no reason to remain. Thus he would leave.
