光井 恋羽
(Mitsui Kohane)

(Level 4 Fairy Glass)

[Esper] Mitsui Kohane Dhm1mxel

"The technological advances made by the Academy City have their ups and downs. You really don't realize it until it hits you in the face."

FULL NAME: 光井 恋羽 (Mitsui Kohane)
OTHER ALIAS: 赤い妖精 (Akai Yousei | Red Fairy), Club Hopper
CURRENT AGE: 15
GENDER: Female
OCCUPATION: Student
SCHOOL: Unknown School in School District 20.
FACTION: N/A

APPEARANCE: Kohane may not be the prettiest girl out there (even within her own school), but she appears on a lot of media, usually as a hologram, so she's more well-known than she thinks. She possesses a healthy, feminine figure with an ample chest that is usually hidden by the majority of her clothing. Her red hair, matching tracksuit and even matching powers are a combination that gave birth to her moniker as the Red Fairy.
HEIGHT: 175cm (5'7)
WEIGHT:  63kg (139lbs)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: N/A

[Esper] Mitsui Kohane VX6fqNT
PERSONALITY:

Amicable
Like a warm fire that draws people, Kohane's smile, honesty and polite speech draws others around her. She is firm but not stoic, retaining a slight sense of passiveness that gives a sense of unchanging warmth.

Red Means Energy
Kohane is an outgoing girl with a drive for sports. She is always switching between relaxing and working at a sport. She can be quite impulsive with anything that catches her interest, so she has quite a collection of miscellaneous scientific theoretical knowledge that belies her grades. Unfortunately, just because she knows things doesn't mean she can really calculate them, so Kohane has no potential as a scientist.

All Your Effort
Perhaps the scariest thing about Kohane is not just her talent, but how she works hard at everything she sets her mind to. Of course, she knows when to give up, but it doesn't stop her from pouring in all her effort until then.

The Athlete
Attending a school in the 20th district, it is natural that her athlethic abilities come first. Kohane has a high interest in athlethic activities as well as talent. Her forte is ice and roller skating, while she is weakest at any sport involving vehicular operation. She is not someone who lives for competition, but rather the art of physical activity that is sport.

A Dream Unfulfilled
She originally wished to be a figure skater, but due to the hologram technology of School District 9 all performing arts are now done by artists who program performances into holographic models... meaning she was unable to follow her dream. She's mostly gotten over it, but the sadness and loneliness caused by such a dream made obsolete by technology still surfaces from time to time.

LIKES:
Sports (particularly ice skating)
Figure Skating
Japanese Sweets
Random Bits of Science™
Flying
DISLIKES:
Rodents
Mayonnaise.
Using a grater. She's had many a cut thanks to these... so she's given up altogether.
Trailer-type trucks. It sends a shiver down her spine every time one turns.
STRENGTHS:
Skating, Sports and general Acrobatics
WEAKNESSES:
Vehicular operation
Long-winded: It's quite clear Kohane is quite passionate about the things she does. As such, it's probably not a good idea to ask her for details because often her babble is generally about the more obscure (or, in some views, mundane) things. For example, asking her about rollerblading might result in something about her talking about how good it feels on hard surfaces rather than soft surfaces...

HISTORY:

Mitsui Kohane is an only-child, a daughter born to high middle-class parents who currently live separate from her due to the nature of her schooling, despite being in Academy City. Her father owns and operates a small chain of popular sporting goods stores while her mother works as a physical therapist for a university-level basketball team. As such it is no surprise that Kohane excels in the field of sports and athletics and genuinely enjoys playing a wide variety of games. Nevertheless, figure skating was the one and only sport that had caught her lasting attention.

When she was younger, the young red-head liked to watch the sports channel on television. She loved every minute of it, but was especially ecstatic whenever it would feature figure skating programs as the young girl allowed herself to be enthralled by the grace and dexterity of the skaters who seemed to be gliding on thin air. Seeing such scenes of polished elegance inspired the young Kohane to promise herself that she would one day take up figure skating as her main sport; a promise that would later become the reason for her esper power, ‘Fairy Glass’, to manifest itself.

On one particular day while watching her favorite skaters grace the ice with their routines, Kohane decided to mimic her idols’ performances and began to dance in unison with the figures she saw on television. Her mother, who was with her at the time, praised and cheered her on as she did; and Kohane, desiring to earn more praise by becoming more ‘fairly-like’ as her idols were, continued her dance while wishing, with every fiber of her being, that she become a ‘fairy’. Her wish was promptly granted and young Kohane’s movements trailed crimson light in its wake before the child cast off her earthly bonds and began to fly. Kohane, the Red Fairy, was born.

Upon learning of their child’s potential as an esper, Kohane was promptly enrolled into Academy City’s Twentieth District where she was trained to develop her esper powers in tandem with her sports prowess. As time passed, Kohane’s natural athleticism and beauty allowed her to outshine a majority of her classmates and become a school idol in her own right, possessed with all the grace and charm as the professional figure skaters whom she adored. It was at this point that Kohane thought that she was slowly working toward her goal, but little did she know that the fateful day where her dreams would be shattered was upon her.

While out shopping for new sports gear with her parents during their monthly visit, Kohane saw what looked like a mirror image of herself on a hologram as it performed complex tricks and turns which only a professional figure skater beyond her own level could make. Unbeknown to Kohane, her parents secretly entered her into a sport’s magazine’s popularity contest which she won, with one of the grand prizes being the winner become digitally rendered as a hologram to perform the latter’s favorite sport.

Completely opposite to how anyone would have felt on such an occasion, the red-head was stunned by the fact that not only could the new holograms be easily altered to look like any person’s registered identification data, it can also be programmed to perform anything their binary commands dictated. She instantly knew then and there that she had practically lost the chance to become a professional figure skater before she even started and as a result fell into a state of depression when she realized that her dream was all but over.

Several years passed by before Kohane managed to recover from her tragic epiphany when her parents, in an effort to rectify their mistake, sent her a package which contained a pair of top-line roller blades and a Blu-Ray instructional video which introduced her to the world of urban skating. While not the sport she had wanted to pour her heart and soul into, in the end, she eventually grew to love it as it became her new past time when not focusing on developing her esper powers and training in her other clubs. Otherwise, due to her idol-like charm and natural ability to excel in any sport, she would often be invited to join a club as its mascot at which point Kohane stays for months to learn from them before moving on once she has grown tired of it. This tendency to skip from one sport to another has given her practical knowledge in almost every sport imaginable and has likewise led her schoolmates and former club-mates to affectionately refer to the energetic girl as the ‘Club Hopper’.

LEVEL: 4
フェアリーグラス (Fairy Glass)
硬質残光 (lit. Hard Light Trail):
Kōshitsu Zankō, or Hard Light Trail, is an ability that produces a glowing glass-like substance that is solid enough to block bullets, yet flows like a liquid while being light enough to hover in the air. It is translucent, it's color teeters between red and pink, and it's exact shade, while recognizable by computer programs, is often the subject of debate, usually between rose, cherry red and cerise. It is nicknamed "Fairy Glass" due to these unique properties. (the terms "Fairy Glass" and "Hard Light Trail" will be used interchangably from here on)

The true form of Fairy Glass is that it is a dense formation of photons in a crystalline structure. However, to directly project light in lattice formations in the amount that Hard Light Trail produces would require such a large quantity of quantum operations that the calculations alone would pose a challenge even to Accelerator, who has the strongest calculating power. To produce solid light through direct compression, pressure force equivalent to a nuclear explosion would be required. However, Hard Light Trail is an ability that achieves efficiency through substitution: By storing the structure inside the personal reality, exposing the photons to it then stimulating the photons electromagnetically, the photons inherit the structure and ultimately trap themselves in the desired formation, creating a single oscillating system that functions as a tangible substance. In order to gather the photons necessary to produce anything of a decent density, Kohane's AIM Diffusion Field saturates the area with photons by acting as a layered, partially efficient magnetic containment field. As not all of the photons are of the same wavelength, Kohane's surroundings only appear slightly brighter, as if she was emitting a dim glow. Despite this AIM Diffusion Field acting like a photokinetic’s, it manipulates electromagnetism, so it resonates with other Electromasters.

The emission of the Hard Light Trail itself uses an operation similar to the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model. By taking a point with a fixed position relative to Kohane’s body (usually just a few cm away), electromagnetism is used to induce an optical cavity at that point. With the structure already stored in her personal reality, the photons are drawn into the cavity through diffusion, undergo quantum phase transition (changing from a wave-particle phase to a particle phase) and exit as the signature Fairy Glass. All Kohane has to do is to define the boundaries, emission vector and the cavity itself. However, as said before, it’s efficiency also has drawbacks. The most notable drawback is motion: Part of the energy-momentum equation is momentum, and Hard Light Trail substitutes Kohane’s physical momentum into this equation to produce energy. This is the reason why it is called Hard Light “Trail”: motion produces physical momentum, substituted into energy to create the optical cavity that releases Fairy Glass out of it, usually like a trail. The other drawbacks are: Fairy Glass crumbles apart outside her AIM (18 meters) or after 30 seconds within. She can only operate 3 cavities and thus 3 points of emission maximum, an emission can’t be very thick: at most 50cm in diameter.

Kohane’s most common utilization of Fairy Glass is for flight: by emitting it under her feet and directing it like jets, she can fly as if she was skating through the air (or like blasting a jetpack horizontally if she really wants to go fast). While this is generally very hard for many esper abilities, thrust is mass flow multiplied by velocity, and considering Fairy Glass has high velocity and there is no limit to it’s density (other than Kohane’s abilities, of course), producing a thrust-to-weight ratio enough to accommodate Kohane isn’t that difficult. While her flight path is flexible enough to draw circles like winding string around a ball, Kohane is quite subject to inertia, since her momentum only increases from the point she takes off to the point she’s flying as fast as she can. Her starting speed is around 18m/s, reaching a maximum of 26m/s. In order to maintain balance, Kohane uses no less than 2 points of emission while flying, and usually keeps her 3rd emission unoccupied. She can fire a compacted blast shaped like a circular platform if she needs to make sharper turns, or she can fire them in succession out the bottom of her feet just to run in air. Aside from flight, Kohane can swipe her hand like a blade, producing a sharp, thin trail of light that can not only split metal with some effort at her current maximum density, but also act as a shield that can protect from most common-issue firearms (an RPG being able to break through) and explosions. She can try to project a sharp flying wave like a flying slash, but it rapidly loses power: it’s effective range is about 9 meters and it’s maximum range is about 12 meters.

Outside the mechanics and calculations of Hard Light Trail, Kohane has her own limitations: Because of her own body (see “Burnout and Refuel” below), she can’t operate her own ability very long. If she’s only flying about in relaxation (and not pulling high G maneuvers), she could last about 10 minutes of continuous operation (7 if she was). If she was in a battle situation where she has to maintain awareness and repeatedly invoke her power at her highest output, her upper limit is 5 minutes, and she would usually be heading for cover by the 4th minute.

OTHER ABILITIES:
Athleticism
Constant exercise and training in various different sports have raised Kohane's speed, strength, reaction time and flexibility higher than the average person. While her reactions in particular are great (since she has to control her power) She isn't anything extraordinary, though, and an esper with a power pertaining to a relevant field would still defeat her. (e.g inertia increase for speed)
Burnout and Refuel
However, not mentioned above, Kohane's stamina is more akin to a small-capacity battery. She can definitely perform high-difficulty physical activity, but she gets tired faster than the normal person. At the same time, she recharges much faster than the normal person, but this constant cycle often leaves her with openings, which is why she has never won any Kendo competition before: An average match against an equal opponent can be about 7-10 minutes, but she tires by the 5th or 6th minute, so anyone who can draw out the fight longer than 6 minutes wins. If the normal match is 7 minutes, Kohane can be said to automatically lose the match. She constantly tries to improve her stamina, but she hasn’t had much success.
Sports Equipment Array
While most of her equipment isn't worth mentioning (especially since she doesn't carry most of it with her), she does own a Shinai, a Bokken and a Yumi after taking part in some of the more traditional sports.

A light fell upon a stage of icy white, illuminating the sole figure standing under it.

Clad in bright, burning red, with similarly red hair and red eyes. Music began to play as the feminine figure took off, dancing around the stage as she went. Gracefully. Energetically. She executed jumps and spins at great speeds in time with the music, slowing down only to charm the viewers with the radiance from her sparkling outfit and perhaps her smile if anyone caught sight of it.

For a whole of 6 minutes, this performance continued. Not a single mistake was made: everything was executed at perfect speed, angles, timing. Ending it with a layback spin transitioned into a Biellmann, she settled down before bowing to the audience... and disappearing into thin air as applause rose from the crowds.

Standing, staring into the television screen was the same person; she was wearing something different, but the facial features, the hair and the eyes were completely unmistakable. Someone would usually feel pride in seeing themselves perform such a perfect performance. Yet, in her eyes was neither pride, nor happiness.

No, her eyes betrayed her inner turmoil: that person on the stage was not her. It was a hologram. Everything that was seen there was fake: programmed by some artist playing with a software. Everything down to the hologram's facial expressions. It was not her at all.

She wanted to be the one on the stage. She wanted to be the one dancing. Compared to her, that hologram was only a lifeless program that did as inputted. It's smile was perpetual. Not a single drop of sweat formed on it's head. The smile was only frozen in an aesthetically pleasing angle. She wanted to be on that stage.

But she couldn't. It wasn't a question of whether she had the money or power: performances like these were long taken over by the skills of programmers who spend their time calculating the angles that produced these so-called "beautiful movements". To anyone else, they might hold the same appeal. But to this athletic girl, it simply didn't. No one was really doing the physical movement. It was just watching a realistic CGI do the work. No one was physically moving. She wanted to dance. She wanted to be the one moving.

Gazing down at her hands, she flexed a finger. A flicker of translucent red light manifested in response. She knew what she had to do: She was going to make a dance that no one could emulate. One that couldn't be recreated by this software and blank, empty holograms.

Resolve burned in her heart, reflected in her eyes: She was going to take this gift given to her from the Power Curriculum and turn it into a dance that surpassed science and charmed even the gods.

The dance of the Red Fairy.

The long awaited Kohane has finally arrived! I must say I still admire the basic concept you based this character on, especially the skating is something that fits this character impressively well.
However there is still some work to be done before we can welcome her to approval land.

1. Strengths&Weaknesses
Vehicular operation
What kind of vehicles is she even allowed to ride anyway?

2. History
Well the amount of vagueness found at the beginning of the history is rather confusing; therefore I need to ask if she was born within Academy City’s walls or outside. I mean you are aware of the difference that simple fact might make, right?

3. Ability, Balancing and all that
Honestly spoken I like the basic idea of her ability, however the way you made it is just way too over the top. Balancing is the key word for what my evaluation on her ability will focus on, as I feel that it is completely lacking in this case. Not only is the ability already powerful enough, but you gave it applications and limits that are way too out there, paired up with an obvious lack of definite weaknesses making it one of the most overpowered things currently available.
Therefore I would kindly ask you to take care of properly balancing this concept into something more humane.

Furthermore these changes are a must:

a) Remove the laser beam attack. Its strength is far too great, especially if we consider that it isn’t the only application the ability has. A surprising sudden laser beam air strike is something most likely only Accelerator is capable of blocking~

b) Please define the ability’s range not by the reach of her AIM Diffusion Field, but by giving a maximum length for the trails. As it is right now I feel like the trails can – depending on her moments – reach lengths of tens to hundreds of metres, allowing for absolute overkill. Not to forget that the range limit you gave is faaaaar tooo great.
Additionally to that you should also lower the number of trails she can create at the same time.

c) Define limits for her flying ability. While flying itself is not a problem it might become one if the person using it is freed of all movement limitations an ordinary human being has. In the end how is one supposed to take down let alone defend against someone who can move freely into any direction at high speeds?

d) Define a minimum movement speed/strength/kind necessary for her to even create the trails. Currently it seems like even the most minor movement would allow for immediate trail creation allowing her to instantly chop human beings to pieces or avoid or block anything coming at her.

e) Not only the ability, but the overall concept is quite imbalanced. A physically gifted and sporty Esper with an extremely powerful ability is something extremely terrifying, making her appear somewhat flawless. And flawlessness is a thing this RP site really doesn’t like. Try to add some more flaws or outright weaknesses to the ability; and maybe even to her overall character.

Bicycles! Also skateboards but that's pretty vague.

2. History
Well the amount of vagueness found at the beginning of the history is rather confusing; therefore I need to ask if she was born within Academy City’s walls or outside. I mean you are aware of the difference that simple fact might make, right?
Leave it to me to forget the most important factor. Yes, she's born inside AC, which is why her dream is so much more distant.

Furthermore these changes are a must:
'kay

a) Remove the laser beam attack. Its strength is far too great, especially if we consider that it isn’t the only application the ability has. A surprising sudden laser beam air strike is something most likely only Accelerator is capable of blocking~
Whoops, forgot to factor physics. I made it an outwards conical flood thing without real offense power

b) Please define the ability’s range not by the reach of her AIM Diffusion Field, but by giving a maximum length for the trails. As it is right now I feel like the trails can – depending on her moments – reach lengths of tens to hundreds of metres, allowing for absolute overkill. Not to forget that the range limit you gave is faaaaar tooo great.
Additionally to that you should also lower the number of trails she can create at the same time.
When designing the ability I took a 100-meter-sprint track and mentally divided it into segments which I used as a reference to her ranges. I clarified it here.

c) Define limits for her flying ability. While flying itself is not a problem it might become one if the person using it is freed of all movement limitations an ordinary human being has. In the end how is one supposed to take down let alone defend against someone who can move freely into any direction at high speeds?
She is subject to inertia. While her flight paths are very flexible, she isn't Accelerator who can theoretically fly himself and constantly turn at absolutely any angle.

d) Define a minimum movement speed/strength/kind necessary for her to even create the trails. Currently it seems like even the most minor movement would allow for immediate trail creation allowing her to instantly chop human beings to pieces or avoid or block anything coming at her.
Wrote a section on that.

e) Not only the ability, but the overall concept is quite imbalanced.
I'll need a bit of time to think on this one, but evaluate the rest first and in my next edit we'll get back to this.

Post  Mugino Shizuri Sun Jun 14, 2015 12:49 pm

After a rather lengthy discussion I had yesterday night I was confronted with realisation: I made a mistake. Well actually I overlooked something extremely crucial about the overall ability. The key word is physics.
I’m well aware of the fact that flight is an important part of her Esper ability, but I’m forced to ask this one crucial question nonetheless: How is this even supposed to work out?

With her using the Hard Light Trail emission as some kind of rocket booster, she is able to travel through the air at high speeds, turning herself into some kind of human rocket. However in order to accomplish such phenomenon she would require a heavy amount of force, not only to defy gravity but also friction.
And this is exactly where I see the problem. Not only is the pressure such action would put on her body somewhat insane, no overall I feel like this is a very complicated process requiring an extensive amount of ability control and the ability to consider any minor factor in the overall equation. She’d need to constantly defy inertia and gravity, in order to fly freely as you wish for her to do, which is somewhat insanely difficult, even for a high Level Esper.
Even if the conditions necessary to reach this kind of state of state are met, I need to point out that movement isn’t exactly easy. How would she be capable of changing directions or even react quickly enough to do so? The speeds she’d be moving at would easily surpass those of a car on a speed way, meaning she’d probably even have difficulties at being aware of her surroundings etc. Even more difficult if we consider the fact that she’d have to do a ton of calculations simultaneously. Not to forget that flying sharp arcs is somewhat impossible. The faster the object moving, the greater the arc necessary to change directions, thus sharp turns are kind of…not given. How does she even slow herself down?

......I must admit that all this has turned out to become a little too complicated. I’d personally prefer it if I could skip out on logical reasoning here, but I can’t, because that’s a part of what this universe actually is. While we can ignore science up to a certain point there are still things we can’t ignore and this case includes too many of those.
And the moment where an ability actually starts to make my head spit smoke I’m feeling like stopping to pursue these things. Flight is something fairly complicated for a normal person to achieve, too complicated in most of the cases. So should something too complicated even be allowed? Might this complicated nature actually be the reason why there are so little flying Espers in the series?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to shoot down the entire concept that is Fairy Glass. Only the flying part has become a thorn in my eye.

Fairy Glass crumbles apart outside her AIM (50 meters) or after 30 seconds within.
That range is gigantic, so please lower it. The maximum I’d consider appropriate would be a radius of about 15m. That’s already quite a distance, so you might lower it if you wish to.

She can only operate 5 cavities and thus 5 points of emission maximum
Please remember that we settled on 3 emissions for the max. number, not 5.

She can try to project a sharp flying wave like a flying slash, but it rapidly loses power: it’s effective range is about 15 meters and it’s maximum range is about 25 meters.
Another range that I’d consider too long. The effective range should be something along the lines of 9m with a maximum range of maaaybe 14m if she really poured effort into it.

I can’t really imagine what her flight would look like, so I need to ask this rather stupid sounding question: Would it be somewhat like the cartoon image of rocket engine equipped roller skates? Not quite the most aerodynamic thing out there.

I still wonder what her maximum flight speed would be like? Comparisons? Numbers? Give me whatever you consider appropriate!

Not only that but I also wonder what Fairy Glass’ limits are. If it is capable of blocking bullets, what can break through it?

I've made it 18m in reference to a certain level 3 Hydro Hand's maximum range.

oooooooooops, fixed.

9 effective, 12 maximum to be in line with her new AIM size.

After taking a look over at the source material that serves as the visual representation for Fairy Glass, most of the highest-speed flight is done in the stereotypical dash posture you see in most videogames (like Megaman X). I've made a minor edit to the description to reference this being as how she achieves maximum, but pertaining strictly to the skating style, you can think of something like this:
Spoiler:
As for her maximum flight speed, about 70mph (~31.3m/s). If she started from her max speed, She could compete with a cheetah in a short burst of speed and be just about even, with the odds leaning towards the cheetah.
Not only that but I also wonder what Fairy Glass’ limits are. If it is capable of blocking bullets, what can break through it?

Common-issue firearms, mostly, with an RPG being the max. If Kohane's shield was put up against Stephanie Gorgeouspalace, it could only take the tungsten steel PDW and she made that on a whim.

To be honest, that speed sounds tough to deal with for any opponent. However we still need to take into account that navigating at such high speeds is extremely difficult, meaning that her accuracy and freedom of movement would lower drastically if she truly went for max burst. After all this speed would make her situation similar to that of a car on a speedway, meaning she would face the same problems as someone behind the wheel and be limited in the same way, like facing harsh difficulties when turning, reacting, battling against the wind and slamming into walls and all that~
But yeah, nonetheless please reduce the max speed to something between 85 and 95kmh.

Also: Blocking a RPG? Bullets are alright to me, but her being able to block a RPG without taking damage? Nope. I’d agree to partial protection weakening the explosion, nothing beyond that. A direct impact from a rocket or an explosion being detonated on top of her shield should in my eyes result in shattering it and her taking damage. Otherwise the power levels would be too out of control.

I need to praise the effort you’ve poured into this character, truly making it a one of a kind thing. Before starting off with some overly long speech I’m simply gonna drop this and leave.
