APPEARANCE: Hayami Saori is an attractive young girl of mixed Japanese and Germanic descent. She stands at a short 5 foot 1 inches and appears to weigh around a hundred pounds. Her long, light auburn hair is clipped so it extends behind to her mid-back, while she retains straight, messy bangs up front. She has sharp, blue eyes and a rather stoic appearance that make her neutral expression appear uninterested or even irritated; but that’s not to say she doesn’t give a small smile when happy or blush as bright as a tomato when embarrassed. She can often be recognized wearing Tokiwadai’s familiar school uniform, but can also be seen wearing a variety of clothes and outfits that range from fashionable dresses, skirts, and blouses to carefree hoodies and shorts.

PERSONALITY:

As a perfectionist, Saori strives for standards that should be too high for an ordinary teenager to achieve. She tends to score very highly on tests and exams, and is quick to correct any mistake she makes; however any slight blunder tends to put her in a depressed mood and she is more likely to procrastinate on work if she feels she isn’t capable of perfection. This extends to her social life as well, and she may not take the initiative if she doesn’t feel confident in her chances of friendship.

Almost like an antithesis to her perfectionist nature, Saori is surprisingly easygoing. Truthfully, whenever she is stressed from school or her social life she finds it surprisingly easy to fall into acting as if nothing were wrong. Her carefree facade is almost enough to fool even herself. When she is able to take a break and breathe a sigh of relief, free from stress and all, Saori finds it much easier to react to others casually and nonchalantly.

Saori is direct and honest. She is quick to state her opinion bluntly while forgetting to take other’s feelings into account. It takes a bit of self-control and foresight to avoid saying something that might damage a relationship. It’s much easier for her to hold back her opinions of herself that it is for her to hold back opinions of others.

When it comes to her feelings and interests, Saori finds herself naturally holding back. It’s difficult to express excitement towards something when it’s met with indifference, and after several school years her behaviour changed from a bright-eyed youth to a stoic-faced teen. With her easygoing personality and inhibited emotions, Saori appears more cool-headed than she lets on. She is quick to downplay her strengths.

HISTORY: Saori was born in Japan to a Japanese mother, a geologist, and a retired German father. Most of her upbringing was with her father, who would teach her math, reading, and writing. It was around the time her younger sister was born that her parents enrolled her at Academy City. She still holds some resentment towards her mother, a woman she had very little opportunity to bond with, and thus blames the parent for sending her away. Saori was a smart child, though, and knew her mother and father had high expectations of her. She therefore forced herself to stifle any gripes and concerns she had about Academy City’s power curriculum.

Due to her mixed heritage, Saori unsurprisingly stood out among her peers. While not quite popular, that sort of attention allows news and rumors regarding Saori to spread like a wildfire. This only served to encourage her to do exceptionally well at tests and exams, especially with the encouragement and praise from her instructors. She pushed her feelings of stress to the back of her mind and strived to outperform others— not for a sense of superiority, but because she believed others expected nothing less from her.

Unfortunately, others didn't see it in the same way. When she proved to be one of the top students in class, some of the more popular kids at the time began to spread rumors that Saori was just a snooty know-it-all. Even as she tried to help her friends with the studying techniques she cultivated, she could feel how they were slowly drifting away from her; as if they couldn't associate themselves with her. She was never harassed directly, but whenever she seemed to show any interest in a thing the other kids would vehemently avoid it until they could enjoy it on their own. She eventually avoided showing interest in anything.

Saori saw herself fortunate enough to graduate into Tokiwadai Middle School, and believed the school to be her chance at restoring her reputation; unfortunately, she now faced a new dilemma. She was no longer a “kid”, which was the view other students had once they reached middle school, thus she had to hide her childish interests. This meant she had to fake interest in things that she believed others expected of her, including fashion and music. She didn’t dislike either, in fact she was excelled in showing interest in them, but neither sparked the same content feelings she has when she buys a new toy or watches cute shows.

At Tokiwadai, Saori stood out even more among her peers as she began to mature in ways subtly different from her classmates. Fortunately, her good grades no longer ostracized her from others, as that was expected for students at such an elite school. As a result, she saw a level of popularity she never experienced before— she still had several rivals that seemed jealous of her achievements, but now she met people who seemed to be genuinely interested in becoming friends with her. She wasn't sure how to deal with this sort of attention, as she was used to people avoiding interacting with her at all. It's with a smile that she eagerly anticipates expanding her friendship to other people, now.

SANDSTORM:
Silica, or silicon dioxide (SiO2), is the one of the best-studied compounds, second only to water. It is also a major constituent of sand, a natural resource that is utilized in most of the industrial world. As a limited derivation of telekinesis, Sandstorm allows her telekinetic control over silica, which can include the manipulation of sand, concrete, quartz, and glass. When dealing with solid objects, Sandstorm behaves similarly to standard telekinesis— when dealing with particles, however, the particles move together as one mass in a way similar to hydrokinesis. She can freely change the shape and density of the mass.

Saori can control silica within 7.2 meters of herself up to a weight limit of 1200 kg— equal to approximately 0.75 cubic meters of dry sand or glass, or 0.53 cubic meters of concrete. It’s important to note that dense objects move much slower compared to a cloud of particles. While she can whip 800 kg worth of silica particles within her range at 85 km/h, she cannot do the same for a solid mass of silica. She can control silica without maintaining eyesight of it, but she cannot control more than two separate chunks at once. She is capable of lifting herself or other objects with silica, and can create a cloud of particles that can obscure vision. With the amount of force she can exert, she can shatter glass but can only break concrete if it has been sufficiently weakened.

The first evaluation of the new year and it’s actually a profile I’ve been looking forward to for a while? Nice!

Let’s get going then.


0. The Overall – Deeper Deeper

Reading through this profile went rather quick and that’s what’s sad about it as it is right now. Saori is a really interesting character, but overall there is a visible lack of depth in the overall. The personality section is short, so are the likes/dislikes, strengths/weaknesses and the history. Given that she is of mixed heritage, someone who actually enrolled into one of the most prestigious schools in Academy City and overall a human being, I do think there is room for expansion.

Therefore, please nourish the aforementioned sections to give us all a much more powerful insight into who Hayami Saori actually is.


I. The Ability – The Beginning

Expansions are probably what everything in this profile kind of needs. In the case of the ability, I’d simply like you to actually expand her range of effect, since 1.8 metres really don’t reach that far in my eyes – especially given that this has to make it a Level 3 ability minimum. Decide for yourself how you’d like it to be, though.

0. I increased the amount of written content by approximately 66%.

I. Range increased from 1.8m ⇒ 7.2m and her weight limit was increased from 800kg ⇒ 1200kg. She can also break concrete. Because she can break concrete, I elaborated on speeds. She can whip sand and glass shards around, but she cannot whip concrete slabs or window panes around.

I mentioned a doom cloud in chat (chainsaw effect via vibration of sand/glass particles). I opted to keep it simple(ish) instead. Flying glass shards should be enough of a deterrent against people wanting to pick a fight, anyways.

Edit: I.a. Reverted weight limit and her ability to break concrete to original values.

It’s rare to happen, but I’ve got nothing to comment anymore! You did an excellent job! Generally keeping the profile more in the normal area is always the best bet to take with a character. They're humans after all.


Make sure to change the weight limit from 800kg to 1200kg as you described in your previous post.
