Alternative to Chatango; Messenger Services.
Due to Sasha's obvious problems with Chatango, I and Kerri (because we seem to always come in pair) have decided to set up a thread for whoever wishes to communicate their Messenger Service username.
As for now, I only have Skype and ooVoo to mention on this post, but you are free to come up with a new Messenger Service to introduce to us.
While I do know that some people may not have time, or do not want to use Messenger services, I still believe it's a good idea to have some way to keep track of each other outside of the forum itself.
(List of usernames will come up if this thread is agreed upon by our members)
Regardless of whenever this thread gets approved by our members or not, social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and the likes will not, and never be listed on this list.

One thing I'd like to ask of you guys though.
As long as I don't consider this thread 'approved' and that the list is not up, please do not write your usernames in-post. I kind of don't want them to get in bad hands.

Re: Alternative to Chatango; Messenger Services.
Group chat for Skype is always an option, though being completely separated from the website it might be a problem for several people, and not as initially accessible for new people who join.

As I said, it is an 'alternative'.Haragi Faye wrote:Group chat for Skype is always an option, though being completely separated from the website it might be a problem for several people, and not as initially accessible for new people who join.
Chatango shouldn't be replaced by Skype and such, but I think it would be wiser to have a way to contact someone should they have a problem accessing the forum or Chatango.

Re: Alternative to Chatango; Messenger Services.
I am in favor of this. I think having an alternate method of communication would be good in the event someone was not able to connect to chatango for any reason.

Didn't Microsoft buy Skype and shut off MSN to move onto Skype?Sasha Kreutzev wrote:I think everyone should use msn.

Re: Alternative to Chatango; Messenger Services.
I personally use my old Yahoo messenger account on Pidgin.
I had also considered using another messenger service for a second chatbox for in character chatter.
Basically I'm in favour of anything that makes keeping in contact easier.

Something like preparing the posts with another person before posting, to make it go smoothly?Guy Li wrote:I personally use my old Yahoo messenger account on Pidgin.

I'll go look up Pidgin and Yahoo now and perhaps add them to the list.
EDIT: Downloaded and installed. Will keep using it if it doesn't mess up with my PC.
I'm fine with using anything if needed.

Re: Alternative to Chatango; Messenger Services.
I use GTalk, now known as Hangouts.. but that was because it was light-weight (no ads) and now days I own an android phone so its just convenient for me.
Been looking at various multi-IM services such as eBuddy and IM+ so I can updates on my phone.
So long as most people use AIM, MSN, Yahoo and the common IMs then it should be possible to find an app that supports all of them.

not that i personally know how, but why not set up an irc room?
there are plenty of free web, browser based services out there.
i, for one, use https://webchat.freenode.net/

To me, that would just seem like replacing Chatango.Yamato Trystan wrote:not that i personally know how, but why not set up an irc room?

I didn't propose messengers to replace Chatango but to facilitate communication when not being able to access either forum or Chatango for a particular reason, or wanting to discuss something with a certain member in private.
And to me, messengers have more advantages for discussing than IRC, whereas I only use IRC when in need to contact VNSociety or whatnot.
And let's not forget that we almost all live in different timezones, so I don't think IRC would be practical from that point of view...

Well, what I'm mainly asking is your acceptance in the thread itself. Not everyone has Skype so we may have to work that around a bit.Seluna Wilson wrote:I put my vote on using a skype group. I had a Yim account but its been lost to the sands of time.
Yet may I assume that you approve of this thread?

Re: Alternative to Chatango; Messenger Services.
no idea what vnsociety is lol.
the main reason that i bring up irc is the fact that it's easy to use - you don't need to register anything (unlike chatango, which generally requires an account), and you don't need to install anything either.
in any case, if we're sticking with messengers, i'd cast my vote with skype/msn. though really, if we wanted to be all-inclusive, we would just get something like trillian lol
::edit::
if what you wanted was simply an approve/not approve, then yes - i approve of this thread's existence.

Re: Alternative to Chatango; Messenger Services.
As I have mentioned before, I am not seeking for a way to replace Chatango so IRC wouldn't really fit me.
If the staff however decides to launch an IRC channel for this forum, I won't have a reason to oppose it but otherwise this thread concerns Messengers. Thanks for your input.
Concerning Trillian, from what I can see it essentially does the same as aforementioned Pidgin. I can't really find anything more interesting in Trillian than what Pidgin already does so I will stick with Pidgin.
Glad to hear so, Seluna.

Re: Alternative to Chatango; Messenger Services.
I don't really care if we're going to change chat services, or if we're going to have another chat box. I don't mind at all. However, I don't have skype and I'm not planning to have one, so that one's probably a no from me.

Re: Alternative to Chatango; Messenger Services.
As I said, Skype isn't the only solution, and to be honest it's quite laggy on my side so Pidgin and such are welcomed alternatives. I'm just thinking that being able to communicate more easily with one another would be good.Misaka Mikoto wrote:I don't really care if we're going to change chat services, or if we're going to have another chat box. And thus, with the approval of both our moderators and our most active members as well as some of our new members, I will talk with Guy a bit to see how to sort the list and other matters. Once it'll be settled I'll put the list up.
